25. SHINee - 1 of 1
A luckily unlucky story: initially this wasn't supposed to be a part of the list, however, when I started doing the write-ups, I wikipedia'd the song which was here before and realised it was actually released in 2015. So after a few-second panic I remembered about this, re-listened and kind of liked it much more than when it was released? While the entire album gives a retro sound a cool modern spin, this is among its most traditional moments. The fresh, current production doesn't overpower the 80s/90s influence which results in a track so perfectly frozen in time. Y'all can bookmark me, this will never get old.
24. Kanye West feat. Post Malone and Ty Dolla $ign - Fade
The Life of Pablo is an album with everything and nothing on it. There are so many ideas floating around which are hardly ever well-executed, most of them range from half-assed to just outright terrible from the beginning. In all the mess, the (former) closer stands out even more. Once again Kanye proves how much of a genius he is. In spite of Fade being practically being a mash-up of several other songs - look them up, they're all quality! - he manages to totally own it and make it his own. As a whole it's just such an easy, pleasant listen and after all, we get four-five great tracks in one package.
23. Luna - Free Somebody
In the year when f(x) decided to start disappointing for the first time since... ever? at least one of their vocalists delievered good solo work. I could basically recommend the entire Free Somebody mini album but it's the title track which stayed with the longest. I'm a bit pressed that it flopped, had she been a white European, this house-influenced bop would've become a huge smash here with its insanely addictive, fresh production and explosive, earworm-y chorus. What's more, Luna proves that she doesn't need her friends, she's just as charismatic and charming on her own.
22. Rae Sremmurd feat. Gucci Mane - Black Beatles
I can't believe I once used to follow Billboard Hot 100. It's such trash, if this didn't come and slay out of the blue, my favourite #1 of 2016 would be Can't Stop the Feeling! which is just sad. But rant aside, it's really cocky and somewhat risky to call yourselves "Black Beatles", however, if you do so and then manage to live up to the expectations, that title becomes accurate. Actually, it does resemble the actual Beatles' hits, it's simple, catchy and heavily based on one repeated hook. It worked for the whites and it works just as well now, showing less is often more and that the carefree, youthful tracks are the best.
21. liv - Dream Awake
Lykke Li could release an album of her farting or something and I'd still hail it as a masterpiece, at this point it's almost a given. Her joining a band with other four talented artists was a dream awake come true then. And while I wasn't fully sold on the first song they released, this punched me hard. Sonically, it's a bit like I Never Learn with a more spacious, atmospheric twist and obviously not nearly as saddening. It's subtle and mellow slowly floating for over 6 minutes but it never gets boring or tiring. Simply put, it's just one hell of a beautiful song.

yas, fade is really genius. the songs he samples are good anyway but it's really him at his a-game in terms of sampling, in spite of the other mess on the record.

1 of 1 was a good song, but I feel like they have other bops nobody knew about this year.
Free Somebody is like the trashier bop of 4 Walls, you know? Anyway I use it a lot.
Love Black Beatles more and more every day.

Phenomenal Woman - and even Overcome (though the former is better) - so good.
Black Beatles is a surprise great #1 song! Love Fade too, I'm seeing it's a pretty common favorite from that album.

If you're into long ballads which could be considered boring by the masses, you'll probably like Dream Awake

I should probably listen to that Luna song + Dream Awake was forgettable to me. I like the rest here though.

Luna is a pretty easy listening for someone not well-versed with k-pop so I would def recommend.

Overcome is cute too but it's never really been a standout for me. Show Me Love or Lucky Man >

20. Angel Olsen - Shut Up Kiss Me
Burn Your Fire For No Witness, an album possibly more acclaimed than anything your faves have ever released, was such a shocker for me. Normally, I'd rant about how boring and unremarkable it is but there's something about Angel which just makes me forget all of its flaws. It led to me actively rooting for her now - she didn't disappoint. I could put all three of her singles here but it's Shut Up Kiss Me which had the most longevity, was the most instant and intense. It easily stands out among her generally subtle, slow discography being a playful, straight-to-your-face anthem. It's youthful, loud in an inoffensive way and just simply fun, with its guitar-driven chorus and Angel playing around with her voice a bit. It might not be the most original thing on the planet but if a ever indie rock song was this good, the world would be a better place.
19. Carly Rae Jepsen - First Time
When Emotion Remixed was released, I was #TeamFever and didn't like this at all. When Emotion Side B dropped, it'd already grown on me a tad but still was far from being a favourite. And now that the novelty has worn off, it outlived all the other tracks in my player and is easily the one I like coming back to the most. It takes all which made Emotion standard great - the masterful 80s-inspired production, simple yet cheerful and uplifting lyrics and Carly's pleasant, soothing voice - and arguably elevates to an even higher level (OK, this is a reach but it's brilliant regardless). Impatiently waiting for what she does next, she's, like, the only pure pop western artist worth checking right now.
18. AOA - Good Luck
Being the mess that I am, I could have sworn the single they released was 10 Seconds and was more than ready to put that piece of pop perfection in my top 10 but alas. Thankfully, my ass will stan for anything with a massive, instantly catchy chorus and the one in Good Luck is insane with its clever and actually pretty inspired use of trumpets. That's of course not to say the rest of the track is bad, the verses build up to the explosion in a really nice way and the rap in the bridge, as clumsy as it may seem, is actually a cherry on the pie, it's charming in such a sweet way, an ideal element to complete this feel-good, laid-back jam.
17. Rihanna - Needed Me
Upon hearing Anti for the first time, I thought I'd jump into the Kiss It Better circle jerk as well but just a few listens later Needed Me came, stole my heart and never left. One thing I always adored about Rih was her unique attitude and this is probably the best example, she totally sells the careless, emotionless persona. You can tell it's genuine, in fact all the things on Anti are, but at the same time it's so well-crafted and perfected, it's brilliant. On top of that, there is also the impeccable production (DJ Mustard's excellent work), especially the chilled-out chorus is the definition of mesmerizing. Oh, and since we're on Rih, let's all put Kiss It Better as our #1 on that ATRL top 50 thing to stop that OVERRATED TRASH Into You from winning!
16. Mitski - Happy
When I first heard Your Best American Girl, I was shook, my jaw dropped, my wig flew off and all that, I was ready to call it my SOTY. I obviously still love it but it was Happy which turned out being the rewarding one in a longer run. Over the nearly 4 minutes it just keeps progressing and becoming louder, more hard-hitting. Partially, it's because of the lyrics (the later into the track, the further from the title they go) and the touching way Mitski's singing them, but it's mostly the instrumental side. For the most part, it just seems like a pleasant background, but she knows exactly how to use them, in particular the bass guitar and trumpets, only at certain points making the atmosphere even more intimate and the emotions even more intense.
