Thats a question that straight people should not be allowed to ask. I think it should become taboo like saying the n word if you're not black. Its not rude if you're gay yourself because you could be wanting to have sex with or go out with that person, but if you're not looking for anything sexual with them DO NOT ASK A SEXUAL QUESTION. If they want you to know, you'll know.

A gay person asking if another person is gay isn't rude. A straight person asking if another person is gay is rude because that person's sexuality has nothing to do with them and shouldn't affect the other person's opinion of them. If you're asking if somebody is gay and you don't swing that way or want to hook up with them, you're acting like them possibly being gay or not is important, and it isn't.
Not wanting something being brought up that is considered "bad" "offensive" and "gross" in almost all cultures does NOT always equal a lack of self confidence.
If you want people to know you are gay and you are comfortable with them knowing, then you can bring it up to them. Asking someone if they are gay is putting them on the spot and practically equivalent to outting them if they are gay tbh. I just find it rude and would never do that to someone but to each his own!

That doesn't make any sense. Why would a gay person ask another person if they're gay if they already know they're gay?

Under circumstances I don't care to specify, a grown woman asked me this and my feelings were very very hurt and my confidence a bit shot. I still remember the month and year.

Unless it's a guy and they're interested in me, it honestly makes me wonder why someone would ask. Even then you wouldn't know if they're interested in you so it's still awkward.
What's rude is when your "friend" asks for permission to start spreading rumors about you being gay just so that people don't think they like you anymore.... Yes, one of my friends did that, although luckily I stopped them.

If somebody is offended by being asked if they're gay, then that's a personal problem.
When people ask if I'm gay/straight, or if I have a girlfriend, I don't freak out on them and say, "OMFG HOW ****ING DARE YOU, I'M GAY, WHY THE **** WOULD YOU ASSUME I'M STRAIGHT WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?".
