Niall's voice is the glue that keeps everyone else's together. Without Niall, One Direction would be reduced to a basic boy band like Big Time Flop.
I don't really care much about Louis but as far as I'm concerned, he has better vocals than Niall. Both are so forgettable though. Niall is eye candy and that's about it. You barely see him on their videos. Louis, on the other hand, can be removed from the group and no one will notice it.
