It's not really perception. The competition doesnt have a better ecosystem and the quality of the App store still prevails over the Android equivalent no matter numbers. Building up iTunes from the iPod launch and adding on the App Store with 500 million accounts and a large amount of iTunes gift cards distributed almost everywhere is a huge advantage that Amazon and Google have yet to be able to compete with. Having the largest library of music, movies, and tv shows also helps.
