How was it not fair? Albums get discounted all the time, some close to that number, even in their first week. Amazon did it for years and no one said anything until it was Gaga.
And discount or no discount, Gaga was clearly going to hit #1 her first week.
Not to mention, the 400k+ coming from Amazon is just basic economy. Born This Way was destined to have a massive debut. Amazon knew people were going to buy it either way, so they took attention away from iTunes by discounting it. I'm sure many of those 400k+ people were planning on buying Born This Way no matter what, but when something you want gets dropped in price it's obvious you go for the deal.

How on Earth is Roar's promotion 'shameless' when it isn't going to help Roar on the charts in even the slightest? It hinders the song from its full potential rather than helps it.
Roar is already selling well on its own, so it's not "shameful" for her or her label, honestly. She's #1 on Hot 100, Digital Songs, OnDemand Streaming, etc. Why would she feel the need to "cheat" for something when everything's already accomplished?
She already has many multiplatinum singles to her name. She has nothing to gain from this.
Born This Way was #1 on iTunes 50 minutes after it's release and Gaga also had about 6 million albums sold in the US before that, and people still "makes fun" of that.

No one was denying Gaga wasn't going to hit #1. It's the question of whether she would have reached the million.
It's an argument from ignorance to say she wouldn't have reached 1 million without the Amazon deal. There's still a pretty high probability it would have, and it 100% would have sold more than 700k+ for regular price w/o the iTunes deal.
