THIS. People who deny this are just delusional. 2014 and 2015 were big years for trap music, just because of Dark Horse(=>the 2nd biggest song all over the world in 2014 so its impact to other artists was undeniable)
Granted that the beat is a very commercialized version of trap- it was for Juicy J after all- but the song is very much a pop song. It has a lot of melody and structure which a lot of rap songs don't.
I like Katy but no. Trap music has been popular for over a decade
She definitely made it mainstream with Dark Horse and whoever denies it is clearly delusional. It's just the same as when Britney took dubstep mainstream with Hold It Against Me.
Nobody is denying that trap music existed and had moderate success within smaller communities before Dark Horse but Katy Perry was able to take the sound, fuse it with pop and make it a megasmash on a global scale.
Give me a list of other trap or trap influenced songs that were #1 global megasmashes released before Dark Horse and I'll gladly admit that Katy didn't popularise the trend.
