Rolling In The Deep as a song isn't risky, but I think the timing was. It was released when dance/elctro-pop was still smashing and managed to not only reach number one, but also start a shift in music that resulted (partly) in WAY and STIUTK being huge hits.

A "risky" lead single would be Justify My Love, from The Immaculate Collection. There was nothing on the charts like it at all, and it's the least commercial single any pop artist has released. Not to mention MTV wouldn't play the massively controversial video.

Yeah I totally agree. The song could have easily been overlooked, but it caught on for sure.
