I can't understand why it is #1?! Do you think it is because of Styled to Rock?

I think so. That and the discount.
Do you find it funny how Rihanna is the final challenge/prize on that show and Katy is just on one of the guest rounds?

With the savage downturn in the economy and rampant illegal downloading's already massive negative effect on sales exacerbated by good weather and the Olympic Games, album sales took another dive last week, slumping 12.77% week-on-week to 1,303,994 - their lowest level since sales week-ending 22 June 1996 (chart dated 29 June 1996) - 842 weeks ago - when 1,277,279 albums were sold.
In this gloomy climate, Rihanna returns to number one with latest album Talk That Talk jumping 7-1, its sales increasing 7.28% week-on-week. It is the first time the album has topped the chart since it debuted in pole position 37 weeks ago. That's the good news. The bad news is that its gain in sales was largely due to deep discounting (it's available for as little as £3 from Tesco online, including postage) and even then it sold only 9,578 copies, shattering the record for the lowest weekly sale for a number one in the 21st century.
The previous low of 13,430 sales was set by Emeli Sande's Our Version Of Events when it returned to number one 11 weeks ago. In 967 weeks since Millward Brown started compiling data for OCC in February 1994, it is the first time an album has been number one on sales of less than 10,000. The previous low: 11,981 set by The Cranberries' Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? 947 weeks ago.
Rihanna's rally helped Talk That Talk to raise its cumulative sales to 910,002 - very slightly less than half the 1,822,465 copies that its immediate predecessor, 2010's Loud, has sold to date.
To put Talk That Talk's sales last week into context: In the strongest chart ever, which occurred at Christmas 2005, 9,974 copies that Jose Gonzalez's Veneer sold more copies (9,974) as it fell 96-99. Talk That Talk would rank at number 100 in the chart, bumping Hikary Duff's Most Wanted (5,497 sales)to 101st. An all-time record of 10,581,571 albums were sold that week. In 2005 as a whole, weekly sales never fell below 2m, with a low of 2,057,148. So far this year, with 32 weeks gone, sales have never gone ABOVE 2m, with a top tally of 1,998,176 in the week immediately before Easter in April.

I read this comment on another forum and I thought I should post it here cause I know how transparent most of y'all will be when hearing these sales:

Rihanna at #1 in August 2012 = the same as her being #100 back in December 2005; how awful is that. Regardless, I don't think the emphasis should be on Rihanna here, but the album-selling climate as a whole. For any album to return to number-one ahead of new releases is an achievement, neverminding the sales. Hopefully the Olympic closing ceremony will boost sales a bit - I imagine Emeli Sande could well return to number-one if it already sold 9,119 copies on a 'dead' week; we could even see a return to 20k if we're lucky.

This is just appalling. The UK music scene is an absolute trainwreck atm. Album sales just keep getting lower and lower each week. I don't think it looks bad on Rihanna though, her album just happened to have the highest sales of an absolutely terrible sales week.

For the outlet, sure. Profit is the same for the artist.

Those pressed souls. If Rihanna is #1 with 10K sales I don't want to think how much your faves album did sell this week!
Your faves would sell their ******* (they do it anyways) to be able to sell 10K sales right now.
Plus even Loud is still selling better than BTW and 4.

No one brought up gaga, btw, 4 or beyonce so you sound pressed as hell
EDIT: and saying that OUR faves exploit sex to sell...I mean, come on this is NO shade.

That wasn't serious. And even if it was true, Rihanna sells at least.
And why should I be pressed? My faves last 2 albums are doing better than album of the decade. I'm honored.

It's suddenly not serious because your shade backfired
Stop acting like Gaga is desperate for sales, because she's not. Btw, regardless, did well, spawned a massive tour, and has absolutely nothing to prove with that era at this point in time if you have more to say, please take it to syg or nhb, because keeping it here is not cute. Thank you.

By selling their *******, i meant they're trying too hard to sell. So my shade is remaining as a fact.
Plus i didn't say BTW flopped. I just can't at some monsters and beyhiv, coming here and laughing while their faves last record is not even in the top 100 while Rihanna has 2 albums in top100.
