Oh and to the question, they get defensive because rock music is the most iconic genre with the most remembered artists/bands and if you call yourself a music fan yet don't know the basics of the rock genre then you look stupid.

Well, its embarrassing when a person who is on a music forum doesnt know or care about the most influential legends and acts like its something cool... I always cringe at people saying how they dislike and never listen to music released before 00s and so on, its pathetic.

Lol, and that's completely okay, I'll respect that. You weren't exposed to urban music as a child and you can't help that.

But that's someone's preference?
People who are 2000 babies might not listen to 90s music because they weren't alive to appreciate the artists or it sounds incredibly dated to them. It's not that serious. I don't listen to much 80s music either (I'm a 90s baby)only MJ and I bop to Like A Prayer but I don't even think that was released in the 80s

People need to understand that there are so many legends/icons throughout the years that it's impossible to know all of them. It's one thing to downplay and artist legacy out of ignorance, but if you genuinely don't know said artist, then I don't see the problem. Especially if you don't listen to their respective genre.
They get man when you don't know their favorite rock band, but I bet they would be just as dumb founded if you started naming jazz or soul legends they weren't familiar with.

In that Pink Floyd thread, you said you didn't know them. If you weren't familiar with them, why did you even participate in the discussion? Google is your friend, people. Stop being lazy.

This is concerning as well. That pride thing is even more annoying than the opposite effect of people bashing the ones who don't know certain artists, imo! I mean It's okay to not know all of a certain acts singles or whatever, but this is a pop music forum. Surely most people on here would have seen some band names thrown out here and there, therefore taking knowledge of them. I mean at the very LEAST the name of the act.
But really it baffles me when someone have not even heard of bands as iconic as Radiohead.

I personally grew up listening to RHCP, Queen, Guns N Roses, Aerosmith and so on. I was only exposed to pop music when I was listening to the radio or watched music channels, so I got really into pop only when I was a teenager. I listened to rock since I was little, and I still do, but I never really listened to Radiohead, since it wasn't my cup of tea, so I did not know who Tom Yorke is. For me they just weren't as big as Queen, RHCP or Guns n Roses to actually look up the name of the members and such. I don't think it's a crime, and I don't get why people get personally offended. It may be important for you, it may have influenced your life, but for some people it's not the case.

What are you even talking about? Rock only started in the 1950's as the white descendant of Blues, Jazz and R&B. Rock is in no way the most iconic genre, in any regard. Blues came before and has far outlived it by simply continuing to influence so many forms of music since.
Why should anybody have to care about Rock more than a lot of other overlooked genres unless they actually like it. It is one thing respecting the foundations of music as we know it such as Blues or Classical music. But Rock is just there. Sure there is a lot of talent within the genre and affected a lot of people at the time of its popularity, but at the end of the day, its predecessors are much more important and should garner much more respect amongst musicians.

And what does it say about pop fans when they attacked an artist, vandalized his wiki page and tweeted him death threats for winning a stupid award over their pop idol without even knowing anything about him and his music?

It's the same reaction you would have if someone didn't know David Bowie, Prince or Elton John
I personally find it surprising especially when we're in a music/ pop culture forum, but hey you learn everyday

People of this generation know who Bowie is and his music only if their parents listened to it. Same goes for every ****ing artist that stopped being mainstreamly relevent before this generation was old enough to care about music. Getting angry about **** like this is really childish.

It was.
The general public is one thing, obviously they will only listen to random people they hear on the radio most likely. But this is mostly about people that are to some degree music fans! I'd think a little background should exist tbh. We're talking about the some of the biggest, most successful, most acclaimed and influential bands of all time for Christ's sake.

You spoke kindly, and that makes me happy, lol. I'm more than happy to learn about all these influential artists. It's just that people (rock fans in this case) need to stop attacking others for not knowing who (rock) acts are. As a user said, it's IMPOSSIBLE to know all the iconic acts throughout time.
