Well I as a Rita fan before reading this article I didn't know that it was her that funded her promotion herself, maybe it's the same for Shakira?

In the music industry nothing is free and if you keep flopping best believe they won't continue to invest in you. Rita had more push and chances than any other new act. She is all over. Getting exposure, endorsements and opportunities She performed at the oscars for Godssakes.

A lot of artists do that and in the end the money used to fund your projects is not free.

Yeah, Jay Brown is a good manager - he got Shakira great promotional spots (Target, The Voice, Activia, Fisher Price, T-Mobile, etc.). I guess I'm comparing it to her previous eras (when she was with Sony/Epic) where they went all out for her releases (with all of the prime promotional spots/performances) but somewhere in between Epic dropped the ball & she ended up at Roc Nation where it feels like she's been promoting everything but her music lol. Part of it might be Shakira herself since she's given birth to 2 children during this past era so she might not be willing to do a lot of promo.

OT: I kind of feel bad for Rita as well - it must suck being swept to the side for other business ventures, especially when you are still an up & coming artist.

The US is not the only place someone can be successful? She has a lot of big to decent hits in the UK and other European countries.

If it's one thing I've seen Roc Nation won't do is handholding. All of its successful artist (J. Cole for example) have an independent drive and talent that lets them do their work on their own terms. I think even Rihanna signed to them looking for this kind of freedom (hence why she hasn't been forced to release an album or single and is going at her own pace), but it can be too much indirection for some people who need more guidance.

That's not true. I'm sure RCA, Republic, or Epic would take her in. For her sake she should avoid Epic even if she's desperate, but the other two are fine.

I don't think they had anything to do with Rita booking that collab. Her and Iggy are friends and share the same management (who aren't affiliated with RN).

what do you mean? her 1st single was a UK #1 hit and no one even knew who she was at that point, this was then followed by another #1 which was then followed by another #1 (plus a #1 album). everyone here tries to paint her out as a flop but it's just not true.

the deals/opportunities she's gotten now are because of her celebrity/name recognition and networking. obviously her past deals have had to be successful for them to offer her more.

i don't see how this makes her ungrateful? a lot of artists have to do things like this eventually (a lot of ATRL's faves have done similar things)
