The first time I bought some, I thought I'd go to one of the self-service places, so that I wouldn't have the awkwardness of having someone scan it at a till for me, but the self-service place broke, and I had to get someone to fix it and he had to do the whole thing for me. Was so embarrassing, especially since it was my first time, and I was buying only condoms.
From now on I always buy them as part of a shopping spree, so it looks like it's just a more "casual" purchase.
