Sorry for letting y'all wait so long. Due to personal reasons I'll be able to continue the countdown tomorrow afternoon at the earliest. Again, thank you for commenting and participating, I really appreciate it. I'll do my best to return the favour!
This album right there was accompanied by what must have been the most ridiculous promo strategy in recent years. And even beyond all the gimmicks, the not-so-anonymous songstress delivered a more than solid LP that doesn't fail to live up to previous efforts -- though, personally, I still prefer We Are Born. *puts paper bag on head again*
Standouts: "Elastic Heart", "Chandelier", "Burn the Pages"
Phantogram – Voices
Phantogram's self-titled 2013 EP gave me utter life at this exact time last year. The four songs taken from the extended play still constitute the record's highlights, but, honestly, it's not like the rest of the album greatly pales in comparison. Amongst the previously unheard tracks, standouts include the guitar-infused "Howling at the Moon" and the sluggish "Bill Murray", which immediately made me recall that one bar scene in Lost in Translation; the entire record basically carries that vibe. I guess we'll find out in the next few years if it's just as timeless, too.
Standouts: "Fall in Love", "Howling at the Moon", "Bill Murray", "The Day You Died" (Possibly my favourite track by the duo)
Jhené Aiko – Souled Out
I had her written off for so long, and at this point, I'm not even sure why. All I know is that this is a super nice and summery record that you need to delve into if you haven't already. For it, the songstress worked with renowned producer and rapper No I.D., cloud rap god Clams Casino, and even featured her own daughter Namiko on the heart-warming "Promises". There are some borderline cliché lyrics here and there, but they don't really take away from the album's great musical qualities. With her tropical and inspirational R&B, Jhené surely brightened up my 2014.
I only really enjoyed Phantogram's first album. I wish they would switch it up more because their sound makes their songs sound too similar. I do love "Fall In Love" though.
