Hermione was never intended to be white. J.K. Rowling just did a poor job enforcing the fact that Hermione could be portrayed by anyone. In fact, it's more fitting for her to be portrayed by a black woman anyways since the struggle of the Muggles (no rhyme intended ) in the novel is very symbolic of the prejudice black people face in society.

omggggg 'Hermione was never intended to be white' I can't believe such a sentence - with that view in mind you could literally say that about any fictional character. Since when did authors have to explicitly write in detail about a character's skin colour? It's always been taken by everybody (including the film creators/casting people ) that she is white!

I just can't even comprehend how people are viewing it as so terrible to be a little shocked/confused by this whole thing.

I'm not racist in the slightest, at. all. But as a big HP fan I do find this a little strange because it's just so left field, and the excuse that 'this is theatre' and anything goes is a bit awkward because HP in the carnation that we're all familiar with (i.e the films and the books) are still so very fresh in everybody's minds.

I'm super tired right now and could probably articulate this a lot better if it was morning here in the UK but yeah, I for one am not shocked by all of the dismayed reactions over twitter about this at all.

You sound so ignorant rn stop while you're ahead! Plain and simple, hermionie (in the books) has no race. She is a fictional character and could be played by any actress good enough to get jkr's approval. If she has faith in her, so do I. My only issue is that the man on the left (I'm presuming its Harry bc the other guy looks like Ron) looks too old to play a middle aged father

Okay first of all - THESE ACTOR AINT YOUNG ENOUGH TO GO TO HOGWARTS..

Literally only like 2 people here understand what is happening. They are playing adult versions of the characters when there kids are at Hogwarts so the "they look old" comments are incredibly cringeworthy.

Also JK Rowling has been heavily involved with the play so she definitely approved of the casting, so you might as well calm down. Although I have been pleasantly surprised by how few racists we've had in here so far considering ATRL's general track record.
