that is how it should be, but in the US..that's not how it works. Servers rely on tips and it is factored in to their hourly wage. Don't punish the servers because the system is ****ed up, it's not their fault.

Many people don't understand how it works.
I saw a lady coming with her 60-year old mom. At the end, the mom was going to hand me $5 (when the bill was like $70), and she thought it is what you are supposed to give, but her daughter laughed a bit and gave me 20% (I was nice, as usually)

Technically, no, tipping is not mandatory.

However, here in the US waiters and servicepeople depend on the tips they get, so if you're American and you don't tip, you're an asshole.

If they did away with tipping and increased servers' wages to $8/hr the price of food at the restaurant would just go up. If anything tipping probably saves the consumer money considering so many of u are cheap and barely tip anything anyway

Even if the service is bad, I'll still tip. I usually tip depending on the total. If it's $11, I'll round up to $15. If it's $30, I'll round up to $40. I don't have a set amount, but I try to tip at least 30%-40%; possibly more if the person deserves it. At buffets, I'll leave a couple of dollars. They don't really do much, other than cleaning up dishes and refilling drinks. It bothers me when people experience good service and leave little or no tip. Yeah, the person is being paid an hourly wage, but in America, it's not much at all.

Well..good luck going to the same restaurant twice. If you live in USA, THIS IS HOW IT WORKS. If you don't pay a tip (if the server was good), you are extremely rude and a bad person.
