I once read or heard somewhere that Brave director, Brenda Chapman, didn't initially set out to make Merida a princess, per se, but she wound up making Merida a princess to make the plot work, not because Pixar/Disney wouldn't make an animated picture with a female protagonist that wasn't a princess. If Disney finds a marketable tale, (preferably from a long dead writer so they won't have to pay royalties) that they think they can adapt for profit, then they'll do it, even if the protagonist isn't royalty.
