The debate on who is the better between Taylor and Carrie has gone on for years and will continue for years to come unfortunately. Give them 10-15 years more and than see what country music considers them

This psot is so true for me the queen is Dolly Parton but if we go back to the 1st major woman artist than its the legendary Kitty Wells. So many great country ladies deserve this title for paving the way

A better example of pure country would be Loretta Lynn but that is part of Patsy's greatness that she could relate to the country audience and yet still try different things as well.

Yeah I was going to say Patsy Cline had a lot of hits with pop leanings. Great singer but not pure country by any stretch.
Billboard is just trolling for hits bringing up a Carrie vs. Taylor debate.

Actually the thing should be who brings the most fans into country music.
Carrie and Miranda expose fans to Tammy, Merle, and other country artists.
I never heard Taylor expose fans to the people who came before her.
She covers pop and rap artists(nothing wrong with that, but if you say Tay brings people into country music, are they exposed to the history of country music).
I learned through other artists cover songs of Waylon and Merle, and got me into their music. I would never have gave them the chance, had I not heard Josh Turner sing their songs.
I hardly think 95% of teen girls know who Patsy, Tammy, Loretta are.

You had Trisha, Reba, Martina, Faith, Shania, Terri Clark, Sara Evans, Tammy Cochran, Gretchen Wilson, Cyndi Thompson, and you think there be a fierce competition, Especially between Shania, Faith, and Martina's fans during their huge peaks of '97-2001.
Now you only have 3 major female singers of Miranda, Taylor and Carrie. Ironically all blondes.
However the thing that me mad about Taylor is how the press "raves" on her. Especially after the Kayne Incident. So she writes her own songs, so do many other artists..Hank Williams SR King of Heartache and his songs are still played in tv shows(NCIS, King of the Hill), Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, John Rich of Big and Rich, Hank Williams Jr all wrote a majority of their songs.
Plus the fact she has a laundry list of "boys" she has dated, crushed on, or broke up with them.
A majority of her songs are love/heartache base.
And Yes I write my own songs, I been writing since I was 16 and when I was 18 I wrote a drinking song in the middle of class. I just published my first book of my songs, and I have influences that extend from Hank Williams to the Insane Clown Posse. But I love country music
|
Boy, you do notice how press has treated her lately right? Sure they did put her on top, but they are also the same crowd who are tearing her down. It has ALWAYS been like that. It's the cycle. Don't just look at the good side.
And it's not just you who are pissed at the current system. But what can we ****ing do right now? I will support anyone who sticks to their guns. And let's not deny that Taylor is one of the few people who are having success while able to maintain her artistic integrity (even tho with the understandable few missteps to win the public's attention). The formula to be a successful artist has always been 70% marketing (public image, etc) : 30% actual music. This rule applies to both alternative & mainstream act.
Again, you believe what you want to believe. Did you know that Taylor only had about 4 high-profile relationships (counting the current one) in the span of SIX years? You can't trust 100% tabloids story.
Also, think this, would it be honest for Taylor to write songs about being a drunk, troubled woman while she has always been the girl with a nice life? Will you call her authentic if she did? I'd call her hypocrite tbh. Isn't songwriters' job is to write what they know and what they feel? Writing about things that ordinary ppl don't have the ball to say?

I don't see why that should matter? He found his true love early on in life others aren't so lucky are you telling me you don't know one person who hasn't been in a few relationships and seems to have trouble sticking to them? Me personally I love real honest music I love when someone isn't afraid to share details of there life in there songs. That is something I love about Hank Williams music and I love that about Taylor's music as well. As a person she might have her problems in the relationship area but Hank had his problems as well and alot of other artists had there problems so I find your criticism quite harsh.

Taylor does bring some of her fans into country music, at least, today's country music. She doesn't seem to have that go-listen-to-real-country-singers-because-you-like-me appeal, but nor does Carrie, I think.

"But she really helped country music. If they're looking for Taylor's videos or songs, they might see or hear other people they like. If her fans are watching for her, they might like me too."

definitely I was rather shocked when I saw it. I'm hoping this thread doesn't get out of hand but it probably will eventually.

If it's not because of Taylor, I would still think Country is trailer trash music. Please stop with the ignorance.

Yeah, but Carrie's last singles have been more on the pop/rock side too, although she doesn't release them to pop radio, only HAC/AC.
But yeah, to call either of them queen of country music is ridiculous and way, way too early.

I'd said if this is about who brings in the most fans into liking traditional country music than Kellie Pickler should take the cake. So many times I see that she tweets about listening to Johnny, Tammy, Kitty, etc. If anyone is exposing people to traditional country it is the great Kellie Pickler
I do think Taylor brings in a good bit of fans into liking traditional country music but most of her fans get into the new country music over the stuff from the past.

Sure. But for people who don't live in US? The closest they can get to Country are them who were fortunate enough that ppl WW can accept their music. I started to get into Country via Taylor. Slowly, I started to educate myself with Traditional Country.
But it's definitely Kellie who introduced her audience to straight up Country music. Doesn't matter how big her audience is. It's a step forward nonetheless.

No doubt and alot of her fans are young kids because of her friendship with Taylor. I mean everyday she is wishing someone a happy birthday or a good day at school and these kids will grow up and some will wnat to get into music that's why I put her as so important of course Taylor can reach people the others can't because of WW appeal but Kellie will be the one to get their to still be traditional country artists in the future. Of course Taylor influences people as well as we've seen with the very talented bahjat and I think you've said that you play music and of course I've been learning guitar but I'm more of a rock guy so I can't really talk about her influencing me to be more into making country music.

I agree; it's just like how early last year, MTV and other sites were fueling the Britney vs. Gaga rivalry.
As far as the "bringing listeners to the country genre" goes, I'd say that both have had a fairly equal hand in bringing listeners to modern country. They also help expose country-oriented fans to music outside of the country genre; for example, Carrie's performances with Tony Bennett and her collab with Aerosmith, or Taylor's performances with anyone from Nicki Minaj to James Taylor to The Civil Wars. As far as exposing listeners to "real" or "traditional" type country music, I'd say Miranda Lambert (and the Pistol Annies) has done more than either Taylor or Carrie. And Kellie Pickler has done even more than Miranda, although probably on a much smaller scale.

I am glad there are taylor fans who are nice and don't act like taylor is queen, she's the best, she's the best ever. I've met them, and they are annoying or just don't know the history of some of the greatest female singers to grace the stage.
Whatever happened to Kelli and Taylor? It's odd they drifted apart, since they wrote songs together and I remember seeing Taylor, Kelli, and Carrie at a hockey game in the late 2000's.
You would think Taylor would of promoted her more, but I am glad Kelli is sticking with traditonal country music. I wish she and Dolly would sing a song together.

I know that all too well but most of them are very young immature kids. I remember seeing a post on youtube that said something like if you are a real Taylor fan than you can't hate anything she does or something like that. Those fans I have to say give us a bad name. As far as Kelli and Taylor's relationship I have no idea what happened with that. I'd love for Kellie to do a duet with Dolly. Kelli is so great and Dolly is well the legendary Dolly Parton so it can't turn out bad can it
