B.o.B (Feat. Taylor Swift): Both Of Us
When I saw that Strange Clouds featured Taylor Swift, I thought to myself instant smash! I think a lot of people were expecting this to be a 2012 version of Airplanes, and while it is a great song, it's just not as memorable as Airplanes was. The chorus is quite basic, it's only two lines.
Unfortunately for B.o.B, Taylor's fans were busy saving all their money for Red, and Both Of Us ended up debuting and peaking at #18. Not bad for a third single from a hip-hop album, but a major disappointment no doubt.
Still, B.o.B's ode to the underdogs sends a warm, inspiring message that you can achieve your dreams.

Dappy: Good Intentions
I'm not going to lie, I hate Dappy. I hate his voice, I hate his attitude, I hate his image, I hate his ridiculous scrawny little body that he always has to show off... I can't stand him. Whenever I listen to N-Dubz I always have to suffer through his parts to get to Tulisa.
BUT the kid can put together a great song. Both Rockstar and No Regrets were solid tracks, but this one is a standout. It's his "poppiest" offering and was the lead single to a surprisingly good album. So thanks for that Dappy. I guess.

Rita Ora: Shine Ya Light
First of all, can we all just take a second to admire this STUNNING picture of Rita. She is gorgeous.
I remember reading a lot about Rita on ATRL at the very beginning of the year, and each track she put out before the album I liked more and more. When she did drop ORA, I was absolutely floored (look for it on my top 20 albums list later).
Shine Ya Light is a super safe top 10 hit. It's a tad on the generic side, but that doesn't stop it from being a catchy, infectious, feel good jam. And the music video is a fantastic ode to her birthplace, Kosovo. Set the world on fire indeed, Rita!

Fazer: Killer
When N-Dubz broke up, I was conflicted. I loved the group, but I really believed that they could deliver some great music separately as well. And it looks like I was right; with Fazer's debut single all three of them are now represented in this countdown.
I've always liked Fazer, not only is he a great singer and rapper, but he has an incredible ear for music and has produced some absolute masterpieces (including some of Tulisa's). Killer is much more dance than what I would expect from Fazer, but it was a welcome surprise. It's a great song.
For some reason though, Fazer hasn't released anything else and plans for his solo album seem to have stalled. In addition, he's the only N-Dubz member without a significant solo hit. Hopefully 2013 will be kinder to him.

Guy Sebastian (Feat. Lupe Fiasco): Battle Scars
I'm a sucker for these emotional hip-hop type songs. Lupe's rapping and Guy's voice fit perfectly together to create a dramatic, emotional little masterpiece. And the piano in the background is just great! It reminds of Love The Way You Lie in a very good way.

Will.I.Am (Feat. Britney Spears): Scream & Shout
When I heard about this song, I thought, oh no, another overrated mess that ATRL is gonna go nuts for. When it did finally drop, I didn't even bother to listen to it. Will's solo material has been VERY hit and miss (more misses than hits) and I'm not a huge Britney fan.
Then I heard it on the radio. Once. And I downloaded it the second I got home. It's electro-hop perfection. There's no discernable chorus, hook, verses, it just sounds like a bunch of sounds mashed together. But who cares!? It's amazing.
And the Britney bitch line truly is iconic.

J. Cole: Miss America
I've been checking for J. Cole for a long time now, I mean, anyone who's caught Jay-Z's eye has got to be something special. I've always liked his features, but I really didn't like his debut album. It was too heavy and dull for me. The only song I did like was Mr. Nice Watch (pretty much the only fast song on the album).
Nevertheless, I downloaded Miss America as soon as it dropped, and boy am I glad I did! It's still J's signature style, but it's just a little bit more radio friendly. I can jam to this!
I didn't use the single cover because it gave me Illuminati teas. No thank you!

Ellie Goulding: Anything Could Happen
I've loved Ellie ever since I heard her on Tinie Tempah's Wonderman. Her debut album was full of flawless gems and the best thing is that there's no one who sounds anything like her. Her style is so unique.
Like many others, I eagerly awaited Halcyon's lead single with bated breath. And of course, Ellie did NOT disappoint! This song is so different from her original stuff, but it's still unmistakably Ellie. The chorus is incredibly catchy and then the breakdown makes you throw your hands in the air and shout:
I DON'T THINK I NEED YOU!
