Like Taylor Dayne and Lisa Stansfield, Carey is a white singer who has a black vocal style. Carey, though, is the best of the lot, with range and power not heard perhaps since Jennifer Holliday surfaced in the mid-'80s.
Can you imagine what it was like being a music stan in 1990 and having MC burst on the scene with VOL? We haven't seen a more impressive debut since then. Even the new wave of divas didn't come out with a debut single that was so well-written, so vocally impressive, and so impactful on the next two decades of music (i.e. Christina's "Genie," Ariana's "The Way," Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" etc. I guess the closest is Adele's "Chasing Pavements," though it obviously didn't have the impact of VOL.) To burst on the scene with this heavenly anthem.... The world wasn't ready
Honestly the debut will always make me cackle because it has All In Your Mind and the beginning of that song sounds like Mariah is trapped inside of Tommy's attic and is trying to get help

My favorite performance of Vanishing. It deserves a impromptu moment tbh.
Her debut is a classic & it has many hidden gems.
Prisoner , Alone In Love , You Need Me , Mariah came on the scene slaying like no other.
Mariah's first interview she seemed so nervous it's cute though.
I'm not one of those girls who'll wait around
Crying 'cause you're playing dirty all over town
You can't do that
I'm not a door mat
You're just a player
That's not my format
Mariah Carey was nominated for the 1991 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, while "Vision of Love" received nominations in the categories of Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Carey won for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and also received the award for Best New Artist.

GOODBYE
Anyways I love this performance
Can we appreciate her backup singers from the debut era? That one guy that would always praise her vocals as she performed Just look at his face as she sings Vanishing at the Tattoo Club! Apparently he's Randy?
