I made a gif that illustrates social injustice; every color being a different group.

There's one person who is a real big example of that. Art does not need to be understood by everyone, but when an artist isn't honest about what their art means, and instead, is putting out an art piece, just for the sake or controversy or attention or... money, then the art is not only "pretentious," but also dishonest. I would highly advise you watch the Banksy documentary, "Exit Through The Gift Shop," Jonathan.

So would you consider this piece art?
Tom Friedman stared at this "piece" for 1,000 hours. That's a lot of work to put into a piece.
I think it's beautiful.

Ew no.
I know art is subjective, but why not offer their point of view on what they perceive their pieces to be?

I can understand if there's actual aim or direction behind, but it's when done for the sole purpose of feeling superior or "2deep4u" it's ridiculous.

But you would be wrong. It is angry, but it's not beautiful. It represents the struggle. It IS the struggle.

But then is it the labor, a "beautiful" aesthetic, or an idea that defines art?
The thing is when we look at or experience modern art we have to take a leap of faith and buy everything the artist is selling us. Can anyone verify if Tom really looked at the canvas for 1000 hours...probably not. But is the idea of a human being doing that intriguing and somewhat beautiful. Absolutely.
So I'm choosing to believe that he in fact did.
And if I was rich enough, I'd probably buy the piece because I love the IDEA he's selling me with his art.

Wow this is brilliant... The tiny white dot on the red is obviously a nod to Where's Waldo. In a way it is recapturing the beauty and simplicity of youth where your only responsibilities where to mindlessly search for a character, but at the same time it is a reflection on the vapidness of modern society.

I remember one time I painted this in about three minutes to make fun of pretentious artists on Facebook and I had some people tell me how beautiful it was

I HIGHLY recommend it. (Britney Spears makes a cameo.) "Exit Through The Gift Shop" is a look at
how an artist can be corrupted. It's fascinating, and one of my favorite documentaries and speaks
directly to your questions about "pretentious art" and what it actually is... or if it means anything.

Yes! Last sem I had a course all about this! It was so annoying cause people are actually paying for the artists' name and not for the work. They showed us lots and lots of these kinda artworks, some are paintings with 2 basic lines on it and some are just squares and ********. It's very depressing because back then art took a lot of time and effort and, of course, talent.
