Well, Michael's record is still outstanding, because he got 5 conseuctive number ones without re-releasing or anything. People enjoyed his music, and that's why they reached number one (and I'm not a Michael fan).
But you're correct with the new generation... People that are so close to number one, they'll pull out a last minute attempt so they could reach #1 (S&M, Til The World Ends, LFN). I'm not a fan of re-releasing singles, reach number one, and still count as their #1 but it is what it is.
