Funnily enough, if I HAD to put together a list of my top ten Whitney singles, most of them would come from 85-89. Her voice was like a monument then, and to hear her take songs like You Give Good Love or One Moment in Time - songs that are actually bad - and transform them into something semi-worthwhile is thrilling.

It still doesn't beat what she accomplished with Million Dollar Bill - that was truly impressive.

Beyonce had just gone solo and her debut was barely more impressive/successful than Janet's AFY era. Plus Janet had just been asked to perform at the Super Bowl, she was hardly fighting to stay relevant.

But the hypothetical is that when Beyonce is in the position Janet was in--past her prime, but still going steady in her late 30s--and something like it were to happen to her, she would probably handle it the same way and receive similar backlash.

"You Give Good Love" is my song, but "One Moment in Time" is terrible sap. "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" (or whatever song was called) is terrible, too. I'm glad Whitney (and Mariah) left that MOR stuff in the early 90s. That's probably my issue with Celine --- she has been doing the same stuff over and over.

No she wouldn't. You know as well as I do that a certain segment of the population always considered Janet to be in Michael and/or Madonna's shadow. Beyonce is in NO ONE's shadow.

It is obvious that Beyonce and Gaga are FAR superior to ANY of the current people in the music industry. I don't think it is fair to say Beyonce is ten times more talented than Gaga though. Considering the fact that they have major talents in different areas. Songwriting, musical intelligence, instruments, and a Broadway voice go to Gaga where as killing it on the stage and being a surreal performer go to Beyonce.

I'd say that Janet has Control and Rhythm Nation over Beyonce in terms of respect pre-Nipplegate. And like Da Beez stated, Janet rose to fame in a different time period where things were [slightly] different so it was harder to garner as much respect.
