Being liberal doesn't make you a Democrat, sis... By that standard, then he's also a Green Party member.
It's about party loyalty. If you aren't a member of a party, regardless of political alignment, you shouldn't have much say as to how that party is run. Factually, Bernie was not a Democrat until November of 2015. He shouldn't have as much say over the party platform as the DNC are giving him, in my opinion. But, they're doing it because Sanders awakened a wing of the party that they're going to have to appeal to. It's less about Sanders and more about the wing of the party that rallied behind him. However, this still doesn't make him a strong member of the Democratic party. He has shown to be a poor Democrat in the vein of threatening the party, suing them, and constantly calling the party corrupt. He is technically a Democrat now (and has been since November), but he's a poor Democrat at that.
