A) Due to how vocal chords work, which is rubbing up against each other allowing air to pass through, the less chord closure, the higher the phonation.
B) If you have any protrusion whatsoever on them, it'll cause less chord closure (because instead of the chords closing, only the nodule or whatever is obstructing it will close).
A+B=Whistle for Mariah. That's why she can talk in whistle so easily when her voice is tired.
But because of all the years of using her 'airy' (sometimes mistakenly called her falsetto) voice, it most likely caused them to rub up against each other way too much and have inflamed them even more (possibly also caused new ones to grow).

Damn. I always figured she was scared of the surgery going wrong like with Julie Andrews. The whistle is her trademark, i understand why she wants to keep it

Despite what you may have heard, she DID come to rehearsal, on time and attentively. Her monitor didn't work then, and she told them. When she came to the live interview with Seacrest, she again said there was no audible sound in her monitor, and said afterward that she couldn't even clearly hear his questions. Despite this, she was again sent onstage without fully working sound, and an avoidable technical glitch is now a headline out of context. I'm personally disappointed that the network/show didn't release a statement, but I have to say that I appreciate MC's social media comment; that's her, in spirit and attitude. It was a heartbreaking event, even if it was a fitting end to 2016. Onward.

I see Daily Mail released photos from her time in Aspen of her visiting a weed shop...obviously to call into question whether she was high during the performance.
A coordinated attempt to smear her or a coincidence?

I believe they did it on purpose. Like when NBC released her mic feed because they were mad at her for showing up late. Mariah must have pissed someone off. This was a rookie mistake for a network television station
