I don't think the cards are necessary for the game. I think they just expedite the process of acquiring a certain villager.
There may be increased interaction with special characters, but I'm not sure. Other than that, they're totally worthless when it comes to actually playing the game, imo.
Speaking of the cards though, stores are imposing limits on them, from only 1 pack to 3-5 packs. Kinda sad for a randomized "collect all 100" item. Nintendo and retailers can't even properly sell trading cards.

Animal Crossing is the kind of game you play obsessively for a few days and then suddenly never touch again. I still enjoy the series tho

If you are a completionist or a customization kind of person, you won't get bored that quickly.
I stuck with New Leaf for a year to catch every bug, fish, and sea creature and experience every holiday.

i've been buying so many amiibos i need to slow down
I think all i really want now is the holy trinity of Robin / Lucina / Marth and then Pit / Roaslina and ill be happy

I love amiibos but I'm not looking to get many. I have Kirby and Zelda, Jigglypuff shipping, then soon Palutena/Sheik/SSB Peach and I'll be finished. (...at least until the AC amiibo festival ones come out  )

3DS > DS > Wii > PS2 > PS3 > Wii U > Xbox One > Gameboy > Psp > Ps4
in terms of games I own, Wii U might pass PS3 / PS2 with XCX, Yoshi, and star fox
3DS i have like 30 games for its crazy
In terms of other systems, I use my Wii U WAYY more then my PS4, but maybe with star wars, horizon, and others it will take the cake

My first DS Lite got dropped in soda My second one has the L/R triggers barely working.
Kinda no use for them now with the GBA SP and 3DS though
