I’m curious about Charles’ personality. Give me three words to describe him.
First of all, don’t settle that it’s definitely the name Charles, because an anagram is an anagram. We definitely have gotten a big clue here. But just know that this person is fiercely intelligent. I would say “devious,” and the word “wrathful.” That’s an SAT word for you. I didn’t say “vituperative,” I said “wrathful.” I could have said “vituperative,” but I’m not going to do that.

Bethany + Charles are a team IMO. Bethany is Black Widow. Sara is dead girl in the grave.

Another thing a lot of people are talking about is Charles’ resources. He managed to build this dollhouse. What can you say about his resources? I don’t know if he had a lot of time on his hands, if he had help...
[Laughs] They feel infinite, don’t they? That’s where I go back to fiercely intelligent and devious, because the ability to amass this kind of—I don’t want to say “arsenal” because that’s a terrible word, but it is an arsenal in a sense because this person’s had a lot of time on their hands to figure out how to carry out such an intricate plot against all of these girls. I would say this person is very resourceful, but their intelligence is what is behind it. Their intelligence and their ability to harness what’s available to them through technology.
He's smart so he's got cash? OK. She didn't even know how to back that one up.

Ddddd wait at Charles wanting to be a girl theory. Then explains why he wanted to get rid of Alison. They call Lucas a hermaphordite. It all makes sense now. LucAs.
Throw in him wanting to be with Jason. I'm HERE for it.

A is called Charles - but that might not be his actual name
that he is Jason's twin - but he might not be related to the Dilaurentis family after all
that he is a guy - but he might be transgender

what r u guys thinking about this theory? For me it makes the most sense
Mr. Dilaurentis and Marion Cavanaugh had an affair which resulted in "Charles." They panicked and decided it was best to put him up for adoption, some place far away (Maybe another country?) no one could know about the affair. Marion suffered extreme guilt which eventually broke her down and resulted in her stay at Radley. At some point Mrs. D joins the board. She has known Marion for years, and being the nosy person she is, she looks into Marion's Medical files to snoop. She then learns about the affair and the child. She's livid.
It gets to the point where she can no longer pretend she doesn't know. Thinking she would be alone, She lures Marion to the roof to confront her. She doesn't see the "fragile patient" -Bethany. Mrs. D and Marion begin to argue, it turns physical, and mrs. D shoves Marion. She falls and dies. Bethany screams, and Mrs. D then realizes she saw everything. She couldn't kill her, so she did the next best thing, and played on her mental illness, convincing her she didn't see anything (just like she did with Ali and the dresses.)she begins to buy her things, and take her on outings. Bethany loved it at first, but soon she started having memories about that night. She finally confronts Mrs. D about what she remembers. Mrs. D becomes angry and tells her she's crazy.
This is when Bethany starts the angry drawings, calling mrs. D a liar, etc. Meanwhile, Ali is wondering why Mrs. D has become so attached to this, "crazy Radley patient." As we know she is extremly jealous. She starts doing her own research and even has Cece check herself into Radley so she could get close to Bethany. Eventually she figures it out. She invites Bethany to Rosewood, mother like daughter, she plays on Bethany's need to feel wanted. But before Bethany's arrival she needs to get rid of Toby, what if Marion had told him about the affair. She throws the firework but injures Jenna instead, she blackmails him to take the blame, and he is sent away. With Toby out of the way she continues her plan to lure bethany there. On the night of the murder she confronts Bethany. She may or may not attack her, But she feels like she scared her enough to keep quiet.
she then heads home. But Bethany isn't afraid and follows Ali to her front yard. This is when mrs. D witnesses Ali get hit with the rock. Mrs. d, or the liars(remember they are drunk and drugged), see this and kill Bethany on accident. They didn't know about the previous confrontation. Now Ali has to get out of town. Her mom knew she was alive the entire time, that's why she was still buying her clothes, etc. Now for Charles. He could be a few characters, but for this theory I'm going with Wren. He discoverd he is adopted, and hires a private investigator (possibly James Neilan) to track down his birth parents. He finds out his mother is dead, but his father is alive in Rosewood. He moves and tries to get close to people who know his family. He finds out he has a brother, Toby, and that he is close to the Hastings. He targets Melissa first but doesn't get much from her, so he goes after Spencer next. After Mona's game is revealed he takes the job at Radley, he's curios about Mona's motives, and also wants to learn more about his mother. He discovers that there is something suspicios about his mothers death, and that the liars have a lot of secrets. He now has access to Mona's secrets, and also medical records. He sees Bethany's drawing of Marion "falling" from the roof and starts to put it all together. He's furious and wants revenge, he then decides to take over the game Mona has created.
The first thing he does as "A" is send Toby clues about Marion's death. He wants Toby to know it was not sucide, he wants to help his brother. (This is the first time A ever offered help) As we all know there is so many clues that tie Wren to A. I couldn't think of a motive until now. Think about all that's happen. Wildens death could even be because he doctored the documents about Marion's death. (There is also a sign in sheet that had the name C.Cavanuagh. Charles would technically be both Dilaurentis and a Cavanuagh.)

From a behind-the-scenes standpoint, how long have you in the writers' room know that "Charles" would be "A"?
MK: We started when we knew that we were going to give the fans the identity of "Original A," which [is what] I call Mona, "Original A." It was before we started writing the scripts for that. We had three or four ideas of who we thought would be a great candidate to steal the game as "A" from Mona, and then very early on in season 3 we decided who that character is.
We had all different types of mysterious characters in Rosewood: Red Coat, Black Widow, etc. Are we going to be getting answers soon as to who was hiding in each of these disguises?
MK: Yes, absolutely, Yes. The finale and the next 10 episodes answer every single one of those questions.
You always told us that you love the why behind "A" so much more than the who -- when can fans look forward to getting the answers why?
MK: All throughout season 6, every episode of season 6 shores up what we learn about in this finale.
Could fans go back and see that you have been dropping clues about "A"'s identity since the beginning?
MK: Yeah I think when fans go back after they know the identity and the story, I think they'll see a lot that they didn't see before they understood the who and the why of it all.
Now that the finale is over, what is the think you want to tell the fans to keep them hooked until season 6?
MK: I'm sorry you have to wait until June -- I'm really really sorry. I wish we could show you the next episode right now. We're so excited about it. All the girls came in early this year to talk about it because they're so excited about this finale and where the story is going. I'm sorry that we have to wait; I really am because I can't wait for these next 10 episodes to unfold.

The finale implied this pretty heavily, but can can you confirm that Charles is Jason's twin, or at least his brother?
I can not confirm that, but that will be confirmed, one way or another, within the next few episodes.
There's been a lot of talk about Big A versus Über A: Is he the final A for the next two seasons?
I will say that Mona (Janel Parrish) was Original A, Charles is Big A, and I don't want to hint to where the show is going after that just yet. Sorry!
What about one of the most prevalent fan theories, that Aria (Lucy Hale) is A?
I read that a lot. That is a good theory. That's all I can say! [Laughs]
Last night answered a lot of questions, but I'm still curious if Varjak factors into this, or was that a red herring?
We haven't heard the last of Varjak.
Is it possible we've seen Charles before, thinking he was Jason or another character?
Yes that is very possible.
Did Mona know Charles in Radley? She seemed to know his name, at least, when she left the girls that anagram a few episodes ago.
Well, we're going to get into that next season because last night, as you watched, it seemed like that was new information to Mona. So she might not have been aware of those anagrams left at her house.
When you "killed" Mona, did you know you’d bring her back? Was that always the plan?
Yes, always. And it was so hard to keep that secret from Janel Parrish, but yes, we always knew that she wasn't dead. We have serious spoiler attempts on this show, so to make sure we could pull that off we sort of lied. [Laughs]
How do you explain her looking so dead in the trunk of A's car?
It's interesting, you'll get a sense of that when we come back. That's kind of not the last time you will have seen a character seem to be dead.
Should we be thinking that Charles is both A and the person who murdered his mom and Bethany, or could there be another killer out there?
There could be another killer out there, and I'm happy to tell you the answer to those questions – I think all of the remaining unsolved murders – will be addressed in the next few episodes.
You Tweeted that the Ravenswood mime Charlemagne was a clue about Charles. Are there any other breadcrumbs you could point to that would help us trace it back to the beginning of the series?
There are some hints in the Christmas episodes, there are a lot of hints in season 4 and a few hints in season 3. This story really started when A stole the game from Mona, so this story really started with episode 301, and it will be ending with episode 610. By the end of our summer finale, we will have finished this story for our Pretty Little Liars.
Let's talk about Andrew (Brandon W. Jones). He started off as this cute guy Spencer knew, but this season he's been doing some very sketchy things, and the hijacked fan was found on Campbell Farm! Is he connected to Charles or is he operating on his own?
The connections aren't random. He's definitely involved in this, and we will find out in the next couple episodes to what extent and what's going on with Andrew.
Are there characters on the show – I'm thinking of Melissa (Torrey DeVitto), the Hastings parents, Jason – who may have known about Charles before the Liars did?
Well, there may be. I mean, somebody has to know about Charles because he was born, he has parents. [Laughs] I know, it's so hard! I hope that was a little bit helpful.
You just started filming, but what are you most excited about for season 6?
We're starting our 121st episode right now, and it's been a long journey and a really fun journey of going over hills and around mountains to get to the finish line. But we are running straight for the finish line now, and it's just so exciting because we have so much momentum with us. Last night was the beginning of the end, and the next 10 episodes are all about layers and uncovering the deeper understanding of who is Charles and why. It's not just a surface level story. It's very deep and complex, but we're about to simplify it for everyone, and hopefully our fans will make sense of it before we even tell them the answers. Some of them already have figured it out!

Oliver Goldstick x THR
What was the thinking behind deciding the Charles reveal?
The thinking behind it is, this is not something that is going to be a total shock to the audience because it's been planted, so we're not just taking something out of left field. So hopefully, this will be something that pays off beautifully for those who have been following us for so many seasons. It's still in a surprising way — I'm not going to say it won't be a surprise! But it won't be like, "Where did this come from?" You'll be like, "Oh, yes. I knew it." And there are probably some people out there who already are ahead of us and go, "Uh-huh, I knew it. Why don't they put me on the Rosewood police force?"
So just to confirm, Charles DiLaurentis is indeed "A"?
Well, I'm just going to say, that anagram is going to lead to answer. That name will lead to something that will not be a red herring. We look it at as a key that is going to open a big ol' door in six A, and our sixth season, which we're writing right now, the first half of it is very compressed. It really deals with the fallout of that bunker and the four girls having this key now and just finding the right door. The Charles identity — even though it becomes sort of like, "What? Who is this person?" — I think it will all make sense when they find the right door.
The finale seems to suggest that Charles is Jason's twin.
I'm not going to substantiate that it is his twin, so just so you know that. That's a lovely theory to have, and you might be right, but I can't say if you're right or wrong at this point. I wouldn't go to Vegas and bet on that one — I would hold onto your money. It will pay off for you, but I think you need a few more clues before you can do that. I'd wait until season six, and by the second [or] third episode, you will be able to put your bet down.
But Charles is part of the DiLaurentis family?
Uh, yeah — maybe! Yes and no, I'm going to say yes and no. How about that for facetious? Yes and no!
When do the Liars — and the viewers — ultimately learn A's identity?
They find out a real juicy clue by the first couple episodes of season six A — as I said, it's a three-week time period; we're only doing ten episodes for the summer — and by episode 10, you will know why the name Charles DiLaurentis came out of that anagram. A's face will be before you — it's a shocker, but A's face will be sprawled across the big screen in episode 10 of six A, the finale. That's a promise.
Is it safe to assume that Charles is someone we've met before? You're not casting a brand new actor for the role?
No, no. That I can guarantee you. You've definitely met this person.
There's talk about the show planning a time jump. What can we expect with that?
Yes, [when] we start six B, yes. What we're doing is, we're framing the six-A season as three weeks before graduation. They basically come back, and we're making that quick ascent to prom and commencement.
So the show will be skipping past the four years of college?
Well, I don't want to talk too much about that because it's premature, but it will be a lovely jump and really satisfying.
When season six begins, will the Liars still be stuck in A's dollhouse?
Yes, they've been there for a while, and their wigs are not looking any better — well, at least one wig is not looking good. They're stuck in there for a period of time, and we will basically revisit that period of time through their individual traumas throughout six A. So you will be basically revisiting some of the things you didn't see between seasons through flashbacks.
Seeing Mona return from her presumed death was quite a shock. What was her plan, and what's next for her?
Mona basically had a very specific plan where she could outsmart "A," unearth the identity and then expose it to the girls and return to Rosewood as a hero. That was her plan, but guess what? Mona is dealing with someone as smart, if not smarter, than her. I think it's important that you keep in mind that there are three brainiacs in Rosewood: Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Mona and Andrew Campbell (Brandon Jones), and that's a very important thing to keep in mind.
Right. The finale hinted at the fact that Andrew might be up to something. How involved will he be in the storyline moving forward?
Oh, you'll see. It's juicy, and his involvement is deeper than you think — I should say, his connection to what's happened to the girls, what they've been going through, is much deeper than you think.
What is the tone of season six at the start?
It's really a gamut of emotions, quite honestly. We just had a table read for the first episode, and it's not just one thing. It's hard because I want to say "intrigue," but it's more than that, obviously. It's "intensity" — that's the word.
Once the Liars find out who "A" is, what's going to be the new focus of the show?
With what we've done with these girls for this many seasons, I don't think you can get rid of "A" that quickly — it's not a rash. This is the fallout of "A," and that many years of mental torment, it follows them. It's not going to go away. There will be vestigial impact, even after they know who "A" is in episode 10. It does not go away quickly — you'll see!
What relationship developments can fans look forward to?
I think there's some really, really nice, soulful relationships happening. There will be some different bonding you haven't seen [that will happen] because of the dollhouse.
Any more romantic sparks between Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Alison (Sasha Pieterse)?
There's romance for both of them — I'm not going to say if it's with each other, but there's romance. Maybe it is with each other, but there's big romance for them coming up in the next season.

Zap2it: So Charles is "A" -- but who is Charles? Is he Jason's twin brother? Is the show definitely saying that?
Joseph Dougherty: We're not saying he's definitely that. We're not saying that at all, actually.
Is it safe to say he is a DiLaurentis sibling?
Um, that would be a reasonable assumption to draw. ... I'm going to seem so passive-aggressive today [ laughs].
When did you decide Charles was Big A? Was it when Mona was revealed as the first A?
If I'm remembering correctly, it predates that decision. We knew we were going to let you know who Mona was and we realized there must have been a force that was working at the same time and was ready to ... take over the game.
There was a lot going on in the vault room -- there were round things that look like gauges from a ship, the mannequin family with a boy and girl child, a playpen with a mobile, a photo on the wall that kind of looked like the creepy baby doll from the first Halloween special. Is that room full of clues for viewers that you are not going to explain right now?
It's full of clues and it's full of texture. There's really nothing extraneous in the room and I think it's safe to say we will be going back in that room.
The person in the dollhouse that we are led to believe is Charles looked to be wearing a wig and also is not even necessarily a "he." Is it possible "Charles" is not a boy, or is that going too far and Charles is definitely male?
We know what we're doing, but it's impossible to take any possibility off the table right now. I can't say yes or no there. ... Here's my problem right now. You're actually identifying things that were done on purpose in order to allow the audience and our rather intense fans to actually figure this thing out before we totally explain it. When we think about these last 10 episodes, we think of it as an amazing puzzle opportunity and if the serious fans get it right even a heartbeat before we tell them what it is, we're going to be incredibly satisfied.
A lot of fans are wondering about Black Widow and Red Coat and how they pertain to Charles. Can they believe he might be one of them or involved with them? What can you say?
By the time we get to the summer 10 episodes, all will be revealed. We know we have this much time and we know we're going to reboot the series, but at the same time we've got this great opportunity to bring fans into the mystery process. They've always identified with the girls, but now they really have to figure this out with them.
It sounds like the summer season is focusing on the girls trapped in the dollhouse, that that's not going to get wrapped up too quickly. Is that fair to say?
They do get out. We don't want to say when. We don't want a false scenario to start developing out there before we come back. We start with them in the dollhouse, is what I can safely say.
It seems like Charles probably spent some time in Radley and is therefore maybe connected to Bethany Young and even Toby's mom. Is that something Season 6 is going to explore? Will we be going back to Radley?
I can quote Lt. Tanner's line because I wrote it -- "It all seems to go back to Radley, doesn't it?"
We only briefly saw Andrew in the finale and he seemed to be removed from the action in the dollhouse. Can fans assume one way or the other that he's not involved with Charles?
You can't assume anything.
But his last name is Campbell and Campbell Farms is where "A's" lair is and where the video was shot. That can't be a coincidence.
No, it's not a coincidence.
What can you tease about the other missing girl that Marlene mentioned in her fan video after the episode aired? Is that connected in any way to Sara Harvey and might we be revisiting that?
I'm trying to think of what I can give you ... There is another missing girl. What can I say about her? It's an important story point. I don't want to point in one direction and people think I'm throwing them a red herring, so that's why I'm being really coy about that. The person is key. Sometimes in order to keep things interesting we have been known to throw curve balls, I don't want to do that. ... That's a very early-in-the-season reveal.
Marlene says the story coming up is going to be wrapped up this summer, so is the collegiate time jump between Season 6a and 6b?
That's our plan right now, yeah.
Have you talked about a special this fall, at Halloween or Christmas?
I think not, unless the situation changes. Here's my stock line: I understand why they don't do the Olympics every year. It just takes a lot out of you. We want to stay focused on the regular broadcast cycles. We love the specials, but they are massive, they take a lot of resources. That could change tomorrow, but I don't think it's going to.
Do you know what Season 7 looks like now that you have Season 6 planned out?
Ummm ... not in the amount of detail I think you're asking the question. I think Marlene has a clearer sense of it than [executive producer Oliver Goldstick] or I do right now. I have a pretty good sense of the world. I'm not quite sure about the driving dynamics in it.
