 The button layouts are not accurate. The patents only detail the particular feature they are patenting. So these images are not showing a final product at all and probably not even close to it. The illustrations only have to demonstrate what it is they are patenting. 
So in the case of that linear Amiibo scanner, that is the only thing they had to detail; not the button layout, not the controller shape, etc. And for the patent with clickable, scrollable L + R buttons, that's all they have to illustrate. Everything else can be vague.
The A + B buttons are just there to give you the idea that that is where buttons will be located and that the piece as a whole is a controller.
