Pre-orders technically don't count until they day of release, which at that point you're charged.. then the sale is counted. So if an album has 100k pre-orders, it doesn't mean it has already sold 100k first week, since 50k could opt to cancel their order.

MDNA was different since it was bundled with the ticket of the tour, which you fully buy at that moment, so those sales instantly counted towards its debut.

were the reason for the massive 1st week

Pre-sales do count toward the first week, but the only reason MDNA had a big first week was because of her tour + free cd package, which accounted for something like 60% of the first week sales.
