this is why 'mother mary' is such a bad opener. this should've been the opener of the encore before 'stay'; the crowd is so dead at the start of 'phresh off the runway'.

THIS is a real crowd reaction, see 2:50
Yes it's true but the opener with Mother Mary is unexpectable.
She should scrap MM and that round screen thing should go up ones the beat kicks in (I believe she did that in Turkey), that would give the ultimate crowd reaction.

I love it. It's like a contemplative confession right before the show, then you get to see the 5 different sides of her. IDK how to explain it but I love it.

Yes and believe me, it was the best tour opening I've ever seen.

i agree that 'mother mary' being a confession before the actual 'show' is a good idea. i just think that it would work only if the crowd only HEARS rihanna, but doesn't even see her. this would build up suspense. that white curtain should stay down during all of 'mother mary', then get right into 'phresh out the runway' with the slow raising of the LED screens.
here's tina turner singing before anyone can even see her, see 2:21-2:53
as you may notice in the european stadium concert videos, rihanna would yell the city name as 'phresh out the runway' starts and people would scream back, but most of the stadium don't even see her until the video screens turn on.
here's are videos of ri-ri slaying stade de france in paris where you can hear two different screams: the first scream when people hear rihanna for the first time and the second scream when people actually SEE her.
see 1:06-1:11
see 0:16-0:20
therefore, starting with 'phresh out the runway' works a lot better in building suspense IMO.
I don't think "Mother Mary" is a bad opener at all, it's just the way they do it. everyone is sitting and waiting for her, then a sheet drops and she's there in all black singing. it's like "wait. where is she? what's going on? Oh. rihanna!" Lol.
If they had shot a video, maybe something about her life from Barbados to now and the different moments in her career and played that before-hand, kinda like saying "I've done and been through all of this and here i am tonight ready to entertain," then had the arena go pitch black and had some church bells ring before giving her a solo spotlight for her to performing "Mother Mary," it would be more of the buildup needed.

This would actually be brilliant.
- The visuals on this tour are petty bland. I mean the Jump ones of her in the helmet and with the mug shot are all we get. It would have been better if she had a mini video in the beginning like you said and before the encore of Stay and Diamonds.
I feel like when Rih goes to do outfit changes the show stops. It doesn't have a continuous flow with Nuno playing ( I know he did a lil something at the end of Rockstar) or dancer doing routines to keep the audience attention.

agreed, I also think if the stage lighting was better, since the mid-section of the stage isnt light at all for most of the show, it would've made things more eye-catching. like if a LED wall was placed there and showed the clips or something.
The "Jump"/"RS101" one was everything, though. especially with all the fire and stuff on the stage that came with it. What she should've done was what you said about her dancers/band. Given them time to showcase their talents in between those changes, play some songs and let the dancers go off and then let the band go off.
I always wonder what the tour would've looked like if the original creative director and his/her vision would've carried out. I think them switching the creative director with just two months or so to spare left little room for the new director to really go to work.
I mean Rih is my fave and I've got nothing against her performing, she's great at performing.
But when it comes to building up hype and playing with the audience she's got a lot to learn.
Just got back from the concert and omfg I have been slayed and brought back to life again by the ultimate Rihallah..
I got to touch the hands of the holy one, she had her Revel stage and it worked out perfectly. She didn't sing MM nor No Love Allowed. I was soo happy when she changed her costumes as I was expecting for her to consider the NZ shows as festival shows. And the hair was a real nice surpise, I scremed when I saw that dusty as mullet was gone and the shaved side was back.
the bitch was 45 minutes late but no one cared once she arrived. People here adore Rih and are questioning the Australian critics who said she was lipping, couldn't sing live and their other bullsh1t. They totally admired her and I even overheard someone saying 'I'm so lucky I bought a ticket to Rihanna instead of Beyonce'
The whole audience were here for all acts, the ratchet, ballad, reggae, dance and rockstar acts.
