I would like the UK to win but then eurovision would be only a 1hr train ride. I'd love Israel to win cuz the song is so good and I'd love to visit

In 2009:
"The winner is Norway, congratulations... but now we have to get points from 30 more countries"

The ESCNation poll, which has predicted 5 out of the 7 past winners (2008 & 2011 being the exceptions) has the current top 5 as follows:
UK - 307 points
Sweden - 286 points
France - 199 points
Hungary - 198 points
Armenia - 189 points
I wouldn't mind this at all

Yas, slay UK
Unfortunately I think this year might end up being like 2011.

I really think this year will be like 2011...an "unexpected" winner.
I hope UK would win it (good for ESC) or Armenia (probably best song).

I'm not so sure, the main reason the favourites fell in 2011 was because of poor vocal performances, but we already know Molly and Aram can deliver live

Is any of the western acts being promoted on radio?
This is what happened with Loreen and last year's winner. Eurovision organizers have been trying to rewrite the statusquo for some years now and they were successful in the past two years. We may see more and more western winners...

I don't think they are much against eastern victories, but it was just a lot between 2003-2009.
And I think they would like Romania to win actually....it even could. It's not really favorite but could sneak in.
I just think that Armenia, Belgium (yuk) and Norway will cancel each other out and someone else might win (hopefully UK lol)

I think the EBU obviously prefer Western countries, especially Nordics. Considering it's the 60th anniversary next year I can see them prefering London (or another British city) to Yerevan. It will be interesting to see where the UK and Armenia get placed in the running order.
That said I don't think they're opposed to Eastern victories, as you said they'd probably like a Romanian win and I don't think they'd mind going back to the Baltics or Ukraine either. It's just I doubt they want another Russia/Azerbaijan situation where there are multiple concerns over human rights, etc.

It's not as much an issue of west vs east as it is finding countries that can afford to host it. It sucks, but with how the contest is developing, we're never ever going to see a "poor" country win. It's just not gonna happen, and the EBU will make sure of it. So basically for future editions we wont be talking about the best song winning, but the best song from countries that can afford to host Eurovision.

because they can also afford to send their songs to radio station internationally to promote. Poor countries will never be able to do that...

Doesn't most of the money come from the EBU itself though as well as sponsors? I think if a poorer country was to win they'd get the right support but yeah, it's not ideal.
They reduced the cost of the contest in 2013 to make it more affordable but Denmark seem to have stomped all over that idea considering the stage this year is apparently huge.

Does that actually happen though? Usually when a song gets airplay before Eurovision, it's because of a hype (Rybak, Loreen, Emmelie), not because they've sent it out as promotion.

Nope, the broadcaster pays for most (all?) of it. When it was hosted in Malmö, SVT paid 12 million euros for it. I think the city of Malmö paid some too, but I'm not sure if the EBU actually helped with any cost at all. And even if there are sponsors, I doubt they pay the entire fee + there's the fact that the broadcasters need to get sponsors too.
Malmö was the cheapest ESC since 2007, btw. Finland paid 15 million euros, Russia spent like 25+ million euros... It's not a realistic sum for a lot of countries.

Interesting. I wonder how Armenia would pay for it if they won, they're not exactly rich...
The BBC could easily afford it, even with the cuts to their budget they could set aside £10m or so. I mean they wasted £100m/€120m on some failed IT project

For the past 2 years I've seen several interviews from EBU stating they want to make the contest smaller, easier so smaller (read poor) countries can host it too.
But on the other hand they have a huge stage this year so I don't know lol.
I'm sure a small country can host it too. They just need to find the right funding. Serbia isn't rich and yet they held one of the best contests in recent years.

Let's also keep in mind that how expensive the show looks =/= how expensive it actually is. Apparently the Danish budget for this year is 25 million euros (wow), but they're hosting it in a shoe box, lol.
We're not going to see real downsizing of the contest until we see a poor country win it, which seems unlikely to happen in the near future.
So even if they're making it possible for countries to host it in smaller venues (the Danish shoe box only takes 10k, and Malmö had a little more than that.. 13-15k iirc), it doesn't actually say that it's going to cost that little... They'll get a portion back from ticket revenues and some sponsor deals, but there's still a substantial amount of money that they have to pay to host.

There is a fine line between paid promo and hype. Like where did the hype come from in the first place for those songs? But well, I don't really care for who wins just enjoy the show as a whole...

Of course, that's why I don't understand why they don't have a bigger audience = more ticket sales = more money to pay the rest lol.
But yeah....we'll see when a "poor" country wins.
