It's a lot lighter than TFM era and had happier songs. U&I, TEOG, BTW, HU and all the bonus tracks are happier songs. Her choices in fashion and style were pretty dark at times, but the most memorable ones were pretty mid:

The only dark songs on the album are "Government Hooker," "Bloody Mary," and "Americano."

The rest of it is actually really happy, empowering, and spiritual.

I think most people just say dark because a) they don't understand it, or b) they are only looking at face value.
