MusicTalker - Rihanna and Katy don't have big first weeks because they aren't artists people truly care for. They are just radio fillers / singles artists. Not to the extent that Pitbull and Flo Rida are but they simply aren't on the top tier A-list level that other pop girls have been on (Madonna, Janet, Whitney, Britney, Bey, Gaga, Taylor S).
& it has NOTHING to do with rising in the digital era, lol. People have this huge misconception that first week sales used to be bigger and that they've declined along with the industry, which is all a huge lie. First week sales are bigger than ever these days and they only started becoming a "thing" in the late 90s. The first week sales record till like 1998 for females was 300k by Janet, lmao. Look at the highest first week sales lists and they're almost ALL after 2000. In our society right now, everything is instant, we need to have it all immediately. Drake, Taylor, One Direction, Bieber, Gaga, etc all rose in the digital era and they can all sell because they're all superstars. These pop girls are not, and that's why it's funny to see the payola put behind them. The labels need to spend all this money on artists who actually matter.
In any case, Katy will get what she puts in. She puts out a flat performance, she'll get a flat reception from the GP with a 270k debut.
Simple as that.

Most of those are in the early 2000s, before the digital era.
lol @ the katy stans saying only the monsters were predicting high for PRISM, when even Bill Werde (Billboard Editor) had a personal prediction of 500k just LAST week.

Who the fk is he to say which artists matter and which not. Just because Katy´s fanbase is not 1000x bigger to have frontloaded sales, it doesnt mean she s not superstar. I dont know why people get cocky these days. Can we just care about the music itself once again ?
Epic Records @Epic_Records 12m
#Harmonizers! We hear you. If you’re @ a SPECIFIC retail location & there are NO @FifthHarmony EPs at the store, plz tell us EXACTLY where!

And ? Payola is normal thing these days. Wait for Gaga´s one. I really wonder what you are doing here. You are not the member of her fanbase, you dont like her music and still you are the most intersted in her sales ? Why ? Just to drag her ? Just to spoil katycats´ mood ? Get a life, really
No one is disputing that PRISM won't do well in the long run.
It's her first week sales that are disastrous when you consider the promotion/tv ads/ radio deals she's had. P!nk didn't have 1/10th the promo Katy has had, so her first week numbers aren't out of the norm. Not to mention that Katy's own label predicted 400k.
For example, just yesterday on KISS.FM (and other ClearChannel stations across America):
and yet she can't crack 300k ? Explain please.
I think they need to play a little more of KatyPerry... Poor girl she has no exposure at all .
Prism shouldn't be compared to TTAL because P!nk didn't have 8 Top 10s during the era before TTAL, Katy had more promo beforehand, and P!nk didn't have a huge first single (and two successful promo singles) like Katy did. And Katy's radio airplay is through the roof. Also, I'm pretty sure I saw Katy Perry's Walmart commercial 5-10 times while watching the TLC movie. Like, literally during every (other) commercial break.
