...it still doesn't take that long. I've ran websites in the past. It doesn't matter how large the website is, a transfer of servers only takes a few days. Maybe a week if there was a lot of setup. But many hosts offer migration services where you don't even have to do much of anything. I'd rather have a week of downtime than getting error messages every 5 minutes.
Hostgator even has a guide on how to transfer servers with 0 downtime

And I'd be happy to lend a hand but I'm sure the admins wouldn't give a regular member the power to take down the entire website

Well they're working on temporarily moving to vB4 but it's still taking a damn long time for temporary software. It would've been quicker to just buy a pre-made theme and work on a real good one when they move to vB5.
