From a young age, Ashley Everett knew she wanted to be dancing with the big names in music. She’s appeared in the music videos of Ne-Yo, Flo Rida, Usher and Jennifer Lopez. As Beyoncé’s female dance captain, Ashley has danced alongside Sasha Fierce on tour and in five of her music videos, including 2009 MTV VMAs best video of the year “Single Ladies.” Just coming off a world tour performing with Beyoncé, Ashley took time to talk with TheCelebrityCafe.com’s Hillary Johns about dancing, her fans and what’s next.
TheCelebrityCafe.com: What inspired you to become a dancer and when did you first start dancing?
Ashley Everett: I started when I was two. I started with ballet. My mom had me in classes when I was young. As far as dancing with artists, I remembering being young and watching videos and watching TV and being like “Who is that? I want to be them.” I remember specifically Janet Jackson, I used to want to be one of her dancers and one of her friends in her videos. And I remember thinking that’s what I want to do.
TCC: What has been your favorite part about performing?
AE: You know what’s really great is just traveling and seeing all the people who love and appreciate Beyoncé and she has some of the most amazing fans. And being all over the world and seeing that. It’s so great. It’s so great.
TCC: What was your favorite place to visit on tour?
AE: Interviewers always ask me that, and I don’t have a favorite. But I’ve been to some incredible places. I love Australia, it’s beautiful. Thailand is fun and amazing. Japan is great. I’ve been to Ethiopia and that was life changing and the same with India because it really just opens you eyes. It made us so humble. I’ve been to so many amazing places I don’t have a favorite.
TCC: How did you get your job dancing with Beyoncé? What was that like? Like the audition and things like that.
AE: Insane. It was crazy. It was a crazy audition. I actually met her choreographer, Frank. We met at Alvin Ailey, when I was training Alvin Ailey. He picked me out and said “Hey, are you a dancer? What do you do? Do you do ballet?” I didn’t know who he was from Bob. And I was like who is this guy? And he was like “I’m Beyoncé’s choreographer. Come in here.” They were actually rehearsing at Alvin Ailey for an award show and that’s where he found me. He brought me in, took my information and I never heard from him. Never. Of course. But what’s funny is that she had an audition like a couple months later. So I went, I was like, ok I’ll go sure. It was crazy, there were millions of people there. And he recognized me, he remembered me. From then on he’s been helping me dance. And now he’s like, he calls me his daughter. We’re so close, we’re like family. It’s so crazy. The rest is history.
TCC: Can you explain to me a little bit about the “4 Intimate Nights with Beyoncé?” What is that like, dancing that in New York? And is it any different from the regular tour?
AE: Oh, yeah, it’s so different. Normally, the shows that she does are huge. Huge tours arenas, like huge venues. We’re in a small little theatre that is only a certain amount people allowed and it can only fit a certain amount of people. And it’s just really intimate. It’s like the show we did in Vegas, the “I Am… Yours” show we did in Vegas. We did a DVD for it too. It’s like that one. It’s intimate and very small. Tickets sold so quick so it’s the most dedicated fans of hers are the ones who are there. But it’s very intimate and it’s very chill. And the audience, they’re great because they are such big fans.
TCC: Well, I’ve noticed you have a lot of very dedicated fans. Like, your Facebook page. I saw you have a lot of fans on there that are sending you videos and just pouring out their love for you! What do you have to say to them?
AE: It’s crazy. It’s crazy for me! I’m like, this is nuts! Little old me? Really? You know when we leave a show, Bey’s fans are waiting for her. Wanting pictures, wanting her autograph. I don’t know. It’s been really crazy.
TCC: Do you have any desire to start a singing career?
AE: I’ve played around a little with that, with the music industry. As for right now, no. But maybe one day.
TCC: What advice do you have for aspiring dancers? Going out there, looking up to you, and wanting to do what you do.
AE: I would tell them to do the same thing. Stay in classes, and take as many classes as you can in training. And have techniques that are going to help you with everything. Take ballet, take jazz, take tap, and take as many classes as you can and train in as many ways possible. The more versatile you are the better. It just helps you.
TCC: What is your next career move? After you wrap this up with Beyoncé, what do you have planned next?
AE: It’s kind of a secret, but I have some things planned. And it involves the other female dancers. And it’s something that we want to do, on our own. I don’t want to give it away,
