^actually considering all of Kelly's singles were huge hits on the Hot 100 on the "Breakaway" era and her album was able to sell over 5M, that's just called having a strong and supportive fanbase. Who will buy the single and the album. I think that's the point of time now, it's just not working the way the industry wanted it too, but because it's so successful they don't dare change it back. Even if they did it wouldn't change people buying songs instead of albums.
In Rihanna's case, she is an established artist, just never tried to build a fanbase. To go from urban sounds to urban/reggae sounds to pop/rock/dance sounds, you will never have time to grab a fanbase cause you're COMPLETELY changing.
Example: Britney is mainly pop music. Her first two albums were full pop albums, reason why the sales were close together. Then she started to develop her sound, but stayed pop which is why her least selling albums were closer together + falling album sales.
Then look at Christina, she started off pop music fully, huge debut. Then "Stripped" was pop, but it was mature/developed which is why it only sold half of the debut, same for Britney except she sold half of her 2nd album. Now with "B2B" selling nearly half of her 2nd album, it is because she completely changed her style again leaving pop music almost completely behind and doing more R&B/urban sounding songs.
Another example is Kelly going from light pop/rock to more dark pop/rock, result selling over 4.4M less than your last album.
So it's not ALWAYS due to digital sales rising. You still have to be able to connect to your fanbase, and please a new audience which Rihanna, Christina, nor Kelly have done with their latest albums.

Breakaway has sold almost 5.9 million copies and MD has sold 700k so that's a drop-off of over 5 million. But the truth is, Kelly's label doesn't want to waste their time or money promoting it out of spite for Kelly and I actually think Kelly wants this record to stay under the radar and have low sales so that she can call it her "artistic" record. If her label promoted a few more singles off of the album though and had Kelly perform a lot of live performances on tv shows and such I'm pretty sure that MD would be over a million now. It isn't a commercial album so of course it was expected to sell less. B2B was an experimental album for Christina but it seriously lacked hooks so that didn't help it's sales. Also it was a double album which costs more so I think less people were willing to pay for it. Thirdly, B2B was way too loaded with filler and a lot of same-y material so I don't think anybody but Christina's hardcore fans were interested. With GGGB, Rihanna made a solid album, but to be honest it is kind of boring. It lacks in originality and the hooks aren't bad but they're something we've all heard before. I think if GGGB was stronger album it would be selling very well. it's a very good album but nothing really sticks out about it except maybe Umbrella and so I think that's a lot of the reason why it's not selling in massive amounts. If the album was released 5 years ago it probably would have only sold 2.5 or 3 million in total.

The only freak here is you, how is an album that will sell more than 1 million a flop. It's stupid and yet you can't see it.
Maybe you were expecting her to do better but that doesnt mean it's a flop, i hope you get it someday

overall beyonce sold half of what she did the first time. ciara sold half of what she did the first time as well. both still did impressive numbers for these times but not compared to thier first.
i agree with the person that said if beyonce had umbrella her sales would have matched her first record. but in rihanna's defence she didnt' have 10 years of dc as prep for being a solo artist.

Okay the reason I said freak is because freak was in his name idiot. So don't go at me like that.
And it's not about if she will or not, it's the fact she HASN'T. it's a flop because "Umbrella" was one of the biggest singles this year, along with "GF", "SIR", "Irreplaceable", yet all of them can sell millions, but Rihanna can only sell 170K first week and still not be platinum yet despite having another couple of top 20 hits and big radio spins? So in my opinion it's a flop.

Who cares?
Since when did sales determine the quality of the music? I've been saying this for too long.

Rihanna is a flop just because even with a 7 weeks #1 single and masive ariplay she couldn't crack the million mark, she will eventually though.
