I dont know why people are using the excuse that this song is for Empire for it being bad. Mariah wrote and produced this and it really could've had at least something to hold on to. But this...it just doesnt have any sparks. It doesnt sound finished, like a demo. I will definitely replay it because it's new Mariah but...woo. My.
Fortunately, I dont believe this is a track they did recently and the chanteuse has evolved since then.
Actually, I lied. There is something to hold on to. When I listen to it on this preview (and I guess on the show) it actually sounds promising. They used the best bits to fit the context, clearly.
After a few listens I feel like it's a leftover that she decided to scrap cause of dangerous woman. It sounds unfinished and very raw. And that's not how anything she does ever sounds. She said it herself her ideas always get stolen. Infamous could've been originally called dangerous. It fits much better
"Infamous" is good. Y'all stay doing the most, really.
Especially compared to infamous Mariah misshots of these past years (Triumphant, Infinity, The Art of Letting go), this song actually sounds amazing. It has a nice melody all around, it has a decent production (I love the choruses) and lyrics, that aren't completely generic and cringy.
I don't mind that Jussie-guy, either. He sounds kinda bland to me, like he could be any male RnB-singer but he gets the job done.
The autotune: when reading some reactions I imagined the worst and what is in the actual song? Something that is totally ok and and actually one of the more inspired aspects of the song: They accentuate the bridge, what's so awful about that?
If this was a lead single I would judge the song harder. But this is a one time thing for a TV show. I listened to the song many many times today and I like it. Seeing some (most) of the reactions on ATRL, I actually wonder if we all heard the same song.
Miley was seriously the pot calling the kettle black in that statement she said "It's all about her and what's she's wearing." Girl, it's all about what you're NOT wearing!!
Fun Fact: My BFF's ex-boyfriend who is not a Mariah fan, loves Ribbon. I won't divulge another fact about him as some of you already think I'm a Jezebel.
