I can't believe her label is letting her release 6 singles off a flop album.

okay lmao at the freak who said Rihanna isn't flopping.
Of course she sold more than Kelly. Because she did have a monster single and no bad publicity surrounding her. If she was in Kelly's situation she would've just sold half of what she has now. And yeah 700,000 is close to 1M, but judging by the sales it's gonna take her another 10 years to reach 1M, and by that time she'll be her 9th greatest hits album.

because even though the album isn't doing well, the singles are all selling like hotcakes....the singles are what help the label recoup the losses from people illegally downloading the album. this is why artists are releasing more and more singles than ever.

You people didn't answer my question.
What is a flop? hm? 500k or less? You act like it's so easy for everybody to sell 5 million albums in a year tops when it is a known fact that sales have been dropping every year. Darr? Durr? You gotta be...I don't know. heh. If an artist goes Gold these days, to me, that is successful. If they don't, oh well, they probably didn't sell very much with their previous albums to begin with, so no big deal.

For a new artist going Gold is respectable, but for an established artist they should be able to sell singles and albums at the same time.

itīs impossible to determine whatīs success, average or flop for an album; so many factors has to be counted in, but yeah, going gold for a debuting artist is definiterly good

All of the above pretty much answers your question. And for all those who appear on Jay Leno/Fashion Rocks/David Letterman/Award Shows/Oprah/Good Morning America/Today Show and ***** themselves up everywhere, 500K is considered a flop. I would add Clarkson here ,but considering she only had one major single out there. I will say she flopped on purpose.

Doesn't matter if the artist is established or not, sales have been dropping for the past 5-6 years and, I'm sorry, but they're not going to change. If Rihanna can't sell 1 million, no problem, if Soulja Boy can't sell 1 million, no problem, if Jennifer Lopez or Kelly Clarkson can't sell 1 million, no problem--as long as they can sell around or over 500k, I'm not gonna label them as flops every chance I get. That's just ridiculous.

For a new artist, 500k (Gold) is very respectable, and most def. not a flop.
For an established artist (Gwen Stefani, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, etc.), 1,000,000 is probably the cutoff point.

Then again, I think single sales are probably more important. Even though her album isn't platinum, Rihanna is probably one of the most important current musical acts...judging by worldwide success and single sales.

Rihanna isn't a one hit wonder, but, I think this should be posted in here:

We are not trying to just "label" anyone as flops. Jennifer Lopez and Kelly Clarkson ARE flops. And you can say it's because of slipping sales, but look at Justin & Beyonce. Both of their albums are 3x platinum, for Bee near 3million which would be either surpassing or nearing in on their debut solo album sales from 4, 5 years ago. Then again they are established artists. If Justin or Bee had only reached 600,000 that is TERRIBLE, considering their names. So that's why Kelly and J.LO can be called flops. 600K after selling over 5M in such a harsh time to sell, and 54K debut for someone who should still be able to at least reach the six figures first week are flops.
Rihanna not being able to sell 1 million is a BIG problem. "Umbrella" should've made her platinum before Summer was over, but she release four singles and still not platinum. Soulja Boy is just another trend people will forget cause the dance will get old.
At this point of time, like I said, established artists should be able to sell at least 1M, if they are established. Meaning they have a strong fanbase. New artists are the ones we can't label flops if they sell near or past 500,000 cause they are coming out at a bad time. If the established artists are still doing something right they can still sell. Not fall into today's industry.

^... so if people are buying the album ... do you think they would also buy the single of itunes... i don't think so... that is why the song was able to spend that long of a time on most charts...
i believe that if someone buys the album they aren't logically going 2 buy the single as well... when they could just rip it ...
