For real though, The Electric Lady is one of my favorite albums. Primetime was one of my favorite songs last year and I saw her live this year. She was amazing.
Matangi is great too! I'm just getting into Boards Of Canada after wanting to forever. They're amazing
Kacey Musgraves - Same Trailer Different Park Released - March 19, 2013
Kacey's journey is the thing of movies. Writing for other talented country females like Miranda, she eventually released her critically acclaimed debut which went on to sweep the Grammys. All this is very well deserved since she has without a doubt the best non-Taylor country album of the decade. Everything is so cleverly written, so self-aware, yet approachable. The songs come from honest places and can apply to anyone. This is a wonderful album if you hate country but respect talented singer-songwriters - there's a song on here for anyone!
Remember when I used to go in-depth with the songs?
Sharon Van Etten - Are We There Released - May 14, 2014
I already mentioned a lot about why this album leaves me breathless. Absolutely one of the most impactful albums of this past year and it means a lot to me. I didn't place it as high as others that won't appear on my list but I placed it here because I feel very strongly for it and anticipate it as a future classic.
The first time that I really took Drake seriously as an artist. He did his thing here and I really appreciate it. THere's a good mix between R&B-leaning songs and straight hip hop which is why its so listenable. I know he gets flack for being a little over-emotional in his songs (moreso in another album which you'll see later) but that's why I like his music so much.
Taylor Swift - Speak Now Released - October 25, 2010
***using the deluxe cover is intentional***
So the first of three appearances by Taylor is from her 2010 album Speak Now. There was so much hype surrounding this album because she was doing something no pop girl does - writing every song, every lyric, by herself and no one else. She pulled it off brilliantly - her characteristic songwriting charms were out in full force and the diversity of the album made for it to be a landmark of an album. I liken this not to a diary but rather a brain, its raw and genuine like the emotions themselves are coming straight out without hesitation.
No Spotify links of course but instead I'll talk about my favourites:
"Enchanted" - obviously the best song ever. An expansive magical moment with so many layers - stunning.
"Last Kiss" - an underrated ballad that demonstrates what I talked about earlier - its honest and heartbreaking.
"Long Live" - one of her best anthems.
"Dear John" - her long ballads are amazing on this album because its like letting out all of her emotions in an eloquently written whirlwind of a listen.
"The Story Of Us" - UNDERRATED!!!
"Never Grow Up" - one of few songs in existence that actually gets me choked up (i'm not embarrassed to admit!!). Her delivery of the lyrics is what gets me the most.
"Ours" and "If This Was A Movie" - lovely bonus tracks that feel like cinematic moments in their own right.
Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel... Released - June 19, 2012
Another female singer-songwriter. Fiona's songs are just soooo brilliantly written and couple that with her edged vocals its a deadly combination. Its only 10 tracks long but each and every track just hits so very hard. I can barely pick a set of favourites so I'll just choose 4 tracks at random.
I was so late to the party with this one. I didn't even listen to it until early 2014 but it persuaded me to go buy it and I do not regret this future classic.
I love nearly all of your picks. Special shout-out to The Idler Wheel..., Devotion and House of Balloons! As for the new BOC album, I didn't enjoy it as much as their earlier stuff but still liked it!
