What a tired and outdated attempt of trying to invalidate "weaker" hurricanes.
Why do y'all only consider a hurricane's impacts based on its category alone? Those winds are mostly within a 10-20 mile radius around the eye; most of the damage done by a hurricane is with storm surge, not wind. Sandy had the pressure equivalent to a category 3/4 hurricane, it's winds wasn't the major factor with all of that damage, it was the storm surge that devastated parts of the Jersey Shore and Long Island. The storm surge is way more complex than just category 1, 2, or 3 hurricane; storm surge factors in the wind field size, the track and movement of the hurricane/storm, the geography of the land, and if a hurricane hits on high tide. Sandy had a large surge with it due to having an over 1,000 mile wind diameter and it's sharp hook on the NJ coast.
Even tropical storms can be devastating, for instance Tropical Storm Allison that hit Texas. It stalled over the Houston metro area and caused several billion dollars in damage due to all of that flooding and became a retired hurricane name.
Sorry if I'm going on a rant right now, but meteorology is an incredibly complex science and people that say "oh it's only a category 1" need to factor in other conditions and be objective before saying such ignorant ass things. I could go on but for now, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
