Hm...It might be disappointing if TRL were to be cancelled. Heck, I would even be a little sad. I only just started watching it again in the past few months. However, I dont think its fair to judge the show on the number of viewers it has now compared to 2001.
Of course the show would have more viewers in 2001. In 2001, names such as Britney Spears, NSYNC and Backstreet Boys literally ruled the world. Rabid fans would do anything for them. The music industry has, well, calmed down quite a bit since then.
Yet, the reason there would be less viewers now also might have to do with the producer's seemingly infinite ineptness. When was the last time they introduced a new element to the show that was actually POSITIVE? They stopped airing it on Fridays, they move it to a time when their "target audience" is not even at home to watch the show, theyve stopped taking votes for videos by phone. They claim theyve shortned the time it takes to retire by dropping the days to 40 so more videos can get on, but by not airing the show in Friday, it actually STILL takes the same amount of time (10 weeks on normal airing w/ a consecutive run, I beleive) to retire.
Maybe it would be the best thing to axe TRL. But if they do, I strongly hope they remember their d*mn roots and at least compensate by experimenting with a new countdown.

Amen to that. I haven't been able to watch TRL since they changed the time except during the summer.

They need to move the time later & show full videos & extend the show to 1 hour & half.
Alot of artists sales will go down if TRL isn't still on.

I definetly agree with Travis they need to air TRL in a later time. I never get to watch it due to college & work so they need to do that.

They also need to show the FULL VIDEO not just 15 or 5 seconds of it and they need to focus more on the MUSIC side.

Yeah, exactly.
TRL should know that no one gives a damn that much about Britney and K-Fed breaking up that they have to make a full episode talking about it.

OMG thank U!!!!
I think a VERY short MTV news break would be welcome but this is supposed to be a MUSIC video countdown not a gossip center. And I also agree that they should show the whole video, maybe they shouldnt try to pack the show with annoying games and so many celebrity guests. One a day or even two but when they get w crap load on there everything just seems rushed and i dont want to feel like that after just getting home from school .

I wonder what happened to Top 20 countdowns, showing On Deck, and that On Deck battle that TRL did 2 years ago (remember when the Game won?).

I do. If TRL can change their time, take phone call votes, and stop cluttering the countdown with interviews and games, they just might get their status back.

Oh yeah. And the closest thing they did to special countdowns is the Christina Aguilera c/d and the Beyonce c/d. Besides those, they didn't do ****. They could've done an end of the year c/d which TRL usually does every year, but nooooooooooooooooooo, they had to sponsor a c/d that has nothing to do with TRL runs!

What's the freakin point of TRL anymore? There's youtube, AOL music, launch, and downloading programs that let you watch the videos you want any time. The interviews you can probably find online too. The games are pointless.
So tell me the point of TRL someone

Shade. You complain way too much.
TRL does need to be cancelled and replaced with something that shows more of what's on MTV's playlist. Top 20, more of the videos, less ********, keeping retirement and statistics...
This could just be gossip though, so I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you.

I think that is a little extreme. If TRL has very little to do with the music industry (hence it being cancelled), then why would it be THE reason music sucks today?
TRL does NOT need to be cancelled. It just needs to be revised heavily.
1) Push back the time
2) Go back to an hour and a half (allow for more video time)
3) Guests are fine, just no games that go along with it (The Wringer, etc.)
4) Just because there are no guests on a certain day does not mean that TRL needs to ***** up time with games. Devote that day to videos more so than any other day.
In other words...TRL needs to do what it used to do in 1999, 2000, 2001ish.

TRL needs a MAJOR overhaul. I agree with people who said the show should be extended to 90 minutes with FULL videos, and a desperately needed later time change. NO juvenile games (October 17th, 2006 - They forced JoJo to play "Full Time JoJo," which was a relay game by making a burger, folding clothes, and making a toss. Completely unnecessary and stupid, when they could have been talking more about The High Road). Also, definitely no more than 2 guests per show, only concentrating on the actors in upcoming or VERY recent movies, as well as primetime shows, and artists with new albums/videos.
Another thing that needs to end: constant MTV promoting. Stop showing previews of other MTV shows. Suchin Pak should only appear in brief commercials, if anything. All First Looks/Pre-RL's should be given as much length as a Premiere. HTSAL did not debut as a First Look, but it did as a Premiere. WTF?
Special c/ds should appear more often, and in conjunction with regular c/ds. For example, if they decided to have a JT Day on Tuesday (hopefully, not...) then it should go like this:
"The number 5 request is Danity Kane, Ride For You, but we've been playing Justin videos all day, so here's [INSERT N'SYNC/JT SOLO VIDEO HERE], Justin's 5th most popular video."
Videos 20-16 should be mentioned at the beginning of the show, and videos 15-11 (On Deck) should appear after #5.
Have a special to retire videos like So Sick, Helena, and Signs, which all made it past 40 days.

The statistics and retirement doesn't even mean anything anymore because they went from 65 day runs to only 40 days to retire. It's a disappointment.
