In the What Kind of Man video Flo mentions storms twice.
"So you think that people who suffer together would be more connected than people who were content?...I suppose if you'd been through something- catastrophic- if you'd been through like, a storm or an earthquake together or something like horrendous...you, it would bring you closer together. But what if they were creating the disaster within themselves?"
"...And there's this big storm that's all around us. And we're in the middle of it, it's calm...but we can feel it. Like it's everywhere."
Throughout the video there's the voice of a news anchor reporting on some sort of natural disaster, with images of a storm playing on the television.
And now in St. Jude, the lyrics clearly seem to reference some type of storm, possibly the same one in Florence's "dream" she was describing to her male companion in the WKOM video right before the crash.
Quote:
St Jude, the patron saint of the lost causes
St Jude, we were lost before she started
St Jude, we lay in bed as she whipped around us
St Jude, maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos
And I was on the island and you were there too
But somehow through the storm I couldn't get to you
Oh, St. Jude, somehow she knew
And she came to give her blessing, while causing devastation
And I couldn't keep my mouth shut, I just had to mention
Grabbing your attention
St Jude, the patron saint of the lost causes
St Jude, we were lost before she started
St Jude, we lay in bed as she whipped around us
St Jude, maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos
I wonder what it all means...And with song titles like "Ship to Wreck" and "Various Storms & Saints", I'm expecting even more weather imagery to show up within the album.
The mix of brass with slight electronic feel is very consistent in both studio versions, as well as HBHBHB and TE live. She really makes a sonicslly cohesive record.
The song is deep and metaphorical on so many different levels, and I can see weather/storms/sky is a motif running throughout much of the album.
St. Jude is so beautiful and smooth, it's fantastic. Her voice sounds a lot different in a good way. It's much clearer and lighter, I really like it. I think this album is coming for 90+ on MC, at the very least 80. It's incredible watching these videos and starting to understand them fitting together like puzzle pieces. I'm wondering if this is going to be a visual album perhaps?
St Jude is amazing. Great lyrics and production.
I also really like the accompanying video.
In general, the visuals of this era, so far, are impeccable imho. I'm loving everything from the technical point of view like colours and cinematography to the symbolism and the story itself
Knew St. Jude was going to be amazing first time I heard it. I wonder what that swarm in the sky was, though... And does anyone know what shape it made at the end of the video?

Well the album is called How Big How Blue How Beautiful, which I'm guessing is the sky which could mean a blank canvas for anything, love life and maybe the various weather components (that obviously happen in the sky) are just the different emotions that you go through, dunno I'm just over thinking stuff now.

I don't think you're overthinking it, you're spot on.
"How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful" is a clear reference to the sky, and possibly the ocean as well. The sky and the ocean can represent life, and the storms represent the turmoils and struggles we go through. Flo said this album is the one most rooted in reality, so I'm guessing she's using these weather phenomena as the metaphor to conveying the messages in the music.
Was not expecting this this morning. Very beautiful.
I'm loving that she is sticking with this director and how she is using a continuing theme with these videos. Wondering if Third Eye or Queen Of Peace will be the next one. The director just posted the other day they are back at it again.
