April 3rd - April 9th, 2009
The chart is bumping this week!
Jamie Foxx f/ T-Pain are shaping up one of the years biggest hits as
Blame It scores a third week at #1. Right below them is
Britney Spears who finally wrestles out of the #3 spot and switches positions with
The Script, who are still bulleted this week. In fact, its an all bulleted top 5 as two new entries join the already strong top 3.
Franz Ferdinand scoots up two spots to #4 to score their second consecutive top 5 hit off their latest album, "Tonight". This is by far their best singles performance from any album they've released. And 2009's current it-girl
Lady GaGa shoots up 3 spots to #5 with
LoveGame, which bests the #7 peak of
Poker Face from earlier this year but still has a ways to go of beating the multi-week #1 reign of
Just Dance from late 2008.
It's all about rock bands further down the chart.
Kings of Leon storm into the top 10 with
Revelry, which is now their third straight top 10 hit off "Only By The Night". I'm going to see them in Toronto on April 21st which will only do terrific things for this single on the chart. The next two biggest gainers have to be
U2 and
Silversun Pickups. U2 just sold out two massive stadium gigs in Toronto, which I am envious to say that I didn't get tickets too, and
Magnificient will hopefully shape up to be a deserved hit for them on the official charts. Silversun Pickups have one mammoth of a track with
Panic Switch, as it zooms up the chart this week after its modest #26 entry last week.
Three debuts this week from modern rock bands that are on the rise and brink of breakthrough. First up is
The Script, who are entering with
Breakeven, the obvious highlight off their debut album and a track released in the UK last year. I do hope it will serve as a follow-up to the brilliant
The Man Who Can't Be Moved (currently #3) in the U.S. Next up is
Cage The Elephant, a band who is currently exploding on U.S. Alternative (already top 30 with a big bullet) with their catchy tune,
Aint No Rest for the Wicked. The track has the free flow style of Bedouin Soundclash but the vocal chops and guitar work of more upbeat rock bands. And last but not least its one of 2009's earliest choices for a buzz band,
Manchester Orchestra.
I've Got Friends just cracked the top 40 on U.S. Alternative and it's one of those anthemic, wave your hands in the air sing a long type of tracks that has the balls to turn into a sleeper hit.
New Albums: I just heard the new albums from Metric and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Karen O and Emily Haines have to be the two sexiest ladies in rock. Terrific albums and catchy as f*ck. A little dissapointed by new Decemberists though.
