More like "How I Ended Up With Robin". He met Robin in the first episode. But I think How I Met Your Mother is the perfect name. I keeps it from being obvious, because from the first episode we knew it wouldn't be Robin since the kids called her "aunt Robin" so this is the perfect plot twist that was unexpected.

Not really since all the episodes of each season are leading to how he met the mother. The final episode can be called "How I Moved On From Your Mother" but other than that no.

Wow, really twist ending. Actually i was rooting for Ted and Robin years ago
But the last 2 season really makes me that Robin and Barney was made for each other, and Ted should with Tracy. Tracy is really lovely and for me she is the perfect choice for Ted
After the years with Barney and Robin's love growing, then we watch the ending like this. I mean come on, after the beautiful engagement, and so on. The "quick" divorce was so unacceptable.
then the story that her mother dying was really cruel. We already have emotional attached with her, then she just cut off like that .
Really interesting but for me it's not the best ending for the show that i watched almost 10 years ago. It's kinda let down
And agree that the first half season of HIMYM was just amazing, then the last half was really so-so.
And this ending is just too cruel to watch. (Though i still enjoy some of the story, but I can't accept the main stories )
But still, Thanks HIMYM for being one of the thing that i grew up with after all this time

For all the mother fans...
It was never about the mother, it was about Robin. The mother (in the title) was just a distraction. It was done to prevent the ending from being obvious. It was just crazy how it all tied together, they did a great job at hiding it for 9 seasons
Since the first episode they planned on Ted/Robin ending up together. That last scene with the kids was shot during the first season.

The only thing I liked about this "twist" is that Victoria got some vindication for being right all along after the writers completely annihilated her likability from her first arc on the show.
I did love the episode overall, it had a great balance of comedy and tragedy, but it was not worth 9 seasons to reach and is borderline disrespectful to "the mother" to be honest.

The thing is that I always wanted Ted and Robin together.
I mean, he ALWAYS loved her like no other, I never bought that thing that he "stopped" loving her in the other episode. A love so strong like that cannot just disappear like that. Yeah, Ted fell in love with other woman, but just like in real life, you never forget your other loves. Ted got what he always wanted, a family, kids; something Robin wouldn't be able to give him, so Ted is happy.
Besides I remember all first season the narrator was calling Robin "his sweet" Robin, or something like that. Like, c'mon, I always taught that was weird because if he was still with the Mother then it was weird calling Robin like that in front of his children.
Whatever, in the end I got what I always wanted, the love Ted really fought for all the time finally ended up with him. Let's be honest, he never fought for Tracy, he never suffered to get Tracy with him as he did with R.

I probably would have liked the ending more if they hadn't spent the season following the mother. She was developed way too much to serve as the plot device she ended up being, but not enough to really indicate her importance in the main characters' lives, which is why I feel kind of cheated.

I would have liked more closure with Tracy. Like I started to get a little emotional when Ted said she was getting sick and I thought it would build up to a scene where she tells him about his chase to find her and how much she loves that about him and that it'll be ok for him to move on. Kinda like coming full circle with Tracy and Max.
I was NOT seeing that Robin and Barney were going to get a divorce at all!!! I really thought that they were going to last. The Ted and Robin scene could have went a little better with some dialogue at least.
Overall, fairly good ending! Now I need for them to announce the 'How I Met Your Mother The Complete Legen....Wait For It...Dary Collection' tbh

Damn....not the finale I was expecting..
But the Barney and baby scene as well as the umbrella scene with the mother makes up for it somehow..

I mean if the show was called "How I Met Robin" it wouldn't have made any ****ing sense to make 9 seasons of plot twists and gags that we never saw coming like... WTF.
Some people are acting like this show isn't about twists when it was always about that.
Also, Ted and Robin always loved each other and Ted always put Robin first like what the hell is the big fuzz about... it was like Ross and Rachel, the writers just made it less obvious.
It was an amazing series finale and I couldn't be more satisfied.

the finale ruined every other finale for me.

more than anything else.. this finale justified everything that happened for 9 seasons.
- why would Ted tell his kids, while the mother was in the next room or something about the dozens of women he banged? BCUZ Tracy's been dead 6 years, and Ted's just telling his story to his kids, since the first day he met Robin.
- why hang on to the Ted loving Robin part till way into the 9th season? bcuz Robin was his meant to be... the unconditional love.
- why did Ted do that whole "45 minutes" speech last season? cuz no matter what he did truely love Tracy, their mother and he would give anything to still spend 45 minutes with her.
- he introduced Robin to his kids as Aunt robin, cuz she still is.. their aunt robin.
the 9 seasons were a legend .. to his undying, unrelenting, against-all-odds love for Robin! Love doesnt have to make sense to make sense. That kind of love doesnt just disappear. ~20 years, Ted got left at the altar, got married, wife died, robin broke up with him, got with barney, got married, divorced, couldnt have kids.. after all these years, Ted still loved robin as much as he did in September 2005, when he stole the blue french horn and stood below her building asking her to be his forever.
how do you make a love story more epic?

Spoilers, so beware:
Even with the more dubious twists the writers presented during the finale (like having Robin and Barney quickly get a divorce after SEASONS of leading up to their big marriage), I was enjoying the final moments of the gang together - Bittersweet moments, but they represent how much I've cared for these characters. It made sense that they wouldn't be all together as much as they used to, as they moved on with their lives. It felt real, because that's just life...
But the last 5 minutes... where do I begin. I feel cheated. I get that during 8 years of his life, Ted never managed to let Robin go. But man, Tracy represented the true meaning of a happy ending. And the way the writers got rid of her so quickly, with no big, emotional send-off... I'm okay with the idea that good things don't last forever and that we should cherish and love each second of the good in our lives, but if Ted was telling his kids the story of how he met their mother only to a few minutes later get their approval on dating Robin again, it seems wrong. I know that 6 years passed and it's normal to move on, but we didn't get to see that and so it just felt rushed.
My favorite moment: Ted and Tracy under their yellow umbrella. Great scene.

i'm actually really surprised the actors who played the kids kept quiet for all this time, keeping the ending a secret. it's really cool of them, and i'm sure when the series finale started rolling around they were just as excited to be like "yeah. we knew the WHOLE time."
