I honestly believe that in spite of her whistles, belts and low notes, the thing that makes Mariah's vocals MOST untouchable is really the breath control. Some of her songs are SO deceptively hard to sing (and yes, I'm aware that the notes themselves make them seem hard enough in the first place) due to how little time you have to breathe in between all the belted passages, whispers, melisma, long notes etc. What a freak of nature!
My Memoirs trinity: H.A.T.E.U., Candy Bling, and (I feel weird for this) I Want To Know What Love Is... it just served exactly what I needed from her at that moment in Fall 2009 so it holds a special place.

Yep, her runs and riffs in this song alone made it so hard to cover. The last "over" gave me chill and asthma

I can't imagine any Mariah fan underrating Vanishing. The devil in me has this fantasy of Mariah telling me she'll sing any song I call out, and I just sit back, cross my arms, and go "Okay. Sing Vanishing."
I was talking Mariah with a friend today who cut her teeth on the debut album and she said she's never been a big fan of Can't Let Go. My heart hurt.
