I'll probably do these things for all of the major finals, it's fun to look at stats and matchups beforehand
The 2012 US Open final will be contested between technically the best player in the world, Victoria Azarenka, and arguably the best player in the world, Serena Williams. Serena leads the head to head 9-1, including the last 7 in a row and the last 5 in a row in straight sets. Both players come into this match with a lot of confidence. Azarenka is 32-2 on hard courts this year, the most wins and best percentage wins on hard courts of all players on tour while Williams comes in winning her last 42 out of 44 matches. No woman since Martina Hingis in 1997 has won both the Australian Open and US Open in the same season (Martina also won Wimbledon that year) and Victoria is trying to add to her wins column today (she has 54 wins, second on tour to Angelique's 56). Serena has 52 wins to her name this year and is trying to repeat her success in 2002 (No woman has won Wimbledon and US Open in the same year since Serena in 2002 [Williams has won those two plus the French that year]). The last time a 30-something has won the US Open was back in 1987 with Navratilova. In 2012, Azarenka is 48-0 after winning the first set. Williams is 48-1, the one loss coming against Virginie Razzano at the French Open ealier this year, the only first round loss in her GS history.
Of the 9 victories Serena has over Azarenka, 8 of them came in straight sets. Victoria's lone win came on a hard court in 2009 in Miami against a visibly injured Williams in the finals. In the Semifinals, Azarenka spent 2 hours 42 minutes to dispatch Sharapova in a physically and mentally taxing match. She lost the first set and was on course for an exit until Sharapova's play dipped, gave Azarenka confidence, and she turned the match around.
Williams has been known to be one of the game's best front runners of all time, as shown is her 542-108 win loss statistic. She has defeated all of her opponents in straight sets, including a 1 hour 4 minute rout semifinal win over Errani of Italy. It shows that once she wrestles control of the match, she's going all the way. Azarenka clawed back after she gained hope from Sharapova's erratic play. Williams is not Sharapova, so once Williams has her hands wrapped around Azarenka's neck, she's going for the kill...
Prediction (from me): a 6-4 6-4 win, giving Serena her 15th major of her career
