Australia isn't winning, they have a female singing a ballad and it's full this year. Won't stand out. The runner-up would host in case of Australia's victory anyway.
They usually sent boring rock songs or trashy folk imo
I do agree that they usually either bomb or hit all the right notes. But anyways, Everyway That I Can, For Real, Dum Tek Tek, We Could Be The Same >>>>>>
It's sad tho, UK being mostly in Top 5 or Top 10 before the 2000, and winning like 5 times, missing the throne by one spot 15 times, and being 3rd few times too...
But since 2000, they've been flopping hard, like 3 times the last position and usually barely making the Top 20.

What happened?
That's because before 1999 all the countries were forced to sing in their national languages and the juries tended to favor songs sung in English. Same with Ireland. They wouldn't have won in 1993, 1994 and 1996 with televote.

We have done well even in years where there were no language restrictions so clearly that is not the only reason we got good results. The truth of the matter is that the BBC used to actually try for many different reasons, particularly in the 1990s they were desperate to win again. Nowadays though the entire attitude towards the contest is apathetic at best, not just from the BBC but from the industry as a whole. There's a bit of a superiority complex that we don't need Eurovision (hardly false though), which contrasts to a country like Sweden for example where winning MF and going to ESC is a huge deal for most artists. Our fate nowadays lies with the few people that organises our selection process, I imagine it was pretty tough for them to find even six acts willing to compete in a national final given some of the pitiful acts that made it. In the past few years the number of songs submitted through the open selection method has rested in the hundreds, very bad for a country of our size especially when you take into account a large portion of them will be joke acts and no hopers.

Are you surprised if you sent trash like this?
One of the worst songs I remember in ESC history.
