Obviously you didn't pay attention to character development during the last two seasons. She's much more than somebody's friend.
She was manipulated, threatened, 'mentally ill' and what not, yet she overcame everything and gained strength. The Lydia from S1 wouldn't want to do anything with supernatural beings if
her best friend had died then
. She's focused and exploring her powers, and there have been multiple hints that she might be the main protagonist throughout this (season 4) arc.
My biggest issue with the show is killing off one character and adding two more.
Right now it's just a cluttered mess with all the new freshmen, Malia, Kira -- killing another core character would be completely unnecessary, hell, we watched all those kids grow for years now and I don't wanna lose another character with incredible story-line potential.
Allison, Isaac, Boyd and Erica were freaking enough
. Let their stories develop instead of killing them off when you're bored with them.
