Nothing is dragging One Direction down on their journey to the top of the UK Singles Chart.

They unexpectedly released the first single from their forthcoming album on Friday, entitled Drag Me Down.

It has had more than double the combined sales of its closest competitor, Little Mix's Black Magic, the Official Charts Company said.

The track has also been clocking an average of 3.11 million daily plays on the Spotify streaming service.

And where are these amazing reviews you're talking about? The only ones I've seen are from the fanbase and you know they'll praise anything they get.

And I DO like the song. However, it's success is driven mostly by the fanbase. How else do you explain its extremely fast jump up the iTunes chart before freefalling with no relief in sight? Almost all their sales are front loaded; so this single is little more than a buzz single like Best Song Ever.
SOML was the last time I actually seen a non-fanbase public respond positively.

For albums yes. I think singles might be the same as always though? I've been so out of the loop lately.

I think DMD is cute, not fantastic or anything but still cute. It'll probably perform decently on radio. SMG only peaked around 19m AI on pop radio, yet DMD will already beat that in 2-3 more days I think SMG was on its way out of the iTunes top 10 at this point already too.

also if that is true then its even better news cos it means the 1D fanbase is even bigger than it was for the last era
so based on u & w/e his name is assumptions that the spotify record & the #1 on itunes run & all the good reviews its getting from billboard etc are all due to the fanbase than we have really come a long way in 5 years

It still has a 30% lead in the US and a 25% lead in the UK after 4 days. It will likely be #1 on friday in the UK and is almost a guaranteed top 5 hit on the Hot 100. For the first time in their career they will have a lead single doing better than the lead singles from the previous album which is a good news for longevitiy.

Now they would just need radio support to top it all off.
