I love LL but I think it would have gotten a lot of backlash for cultural appropriation... in saying that Dark Horse's MV had some controversy but that was able to cover up, LL is the whole song... hmm. WoA probably would have worked internationally but I don't think it would have been big in the US, Top 20 like Birthday maybe.
It was an impossible situation after Birthday. If she'd pandered to radio and released WoA/LL there would be the above problems, but since she gave the GP what they wanted, radios refused to play it.
It really does all come back to Birthday tbh. With a great video, TIHWD would have been the fifth single with good airplay another Top 10, and LL could follow and the era momentum would outweigh the backlash. That's the true tea.
