Reeces' Best Of '09: Top 50 Singles (41-39)
41. Kristinia DeBarge “Goodbye”
“Take this final piece of advice, and get yourself together, but either way baby I’m gone”
Kristinia DeBarge came to the music scene this year and she will be more than likely labeled as a one-hit wonder, but at least she managed to release a summer hit and who knows? Maybe she comes back with fire this year. ‘Goodbye’ has a very familiar hook as it samples the number hit ‘Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye’, which was sampled in a few other songs this year, but it doesn’t sounds as catchy as it does here. Kristinia’s vocal are solid, and that shouldn’t be surprising considering her family legacy. ‘Goodbye’ is about a girl being free and independent as she finally breaks up with a controlling boyfriend, the video is a great visual for the song. While her future remains uncertain, Kristinia is a talented singer and she definitely deserves a second chance. Let’s hope ‘Goodbye’ is only the beginning of her career and not a premature end.
40. P!nk “Please Don’t Leave Me”
“I cannot be without, you’re my perfect real punching bag, and I miss you, I’m sorry”
I fell in love with this track the first time I heard Funhouse, I was addicted to it and couldn’t stop playing it for a few months. In this track, P!nk teamed up with Max Martin, who helped her put together ‘U + Ur Hand’ and ‘So What’. Lyrically, ‘Please Don’t Leave Me’, is a lyrically masterpiece, it talks about admitting to being a difficult lover and at the same time begging for forgiveness. Her voice has a desperate tone that adds more emotion to the track and the hypnotizing ’da da da da’ in the background make this song more enjoyable. The accompanying video is simply kick ass, P!nk definitely has the ability to create great visuals for her songs and that’s one of the thing that I love the most about her. P!nk is no stranger to being in my charts, and while this is her last appearance, she made one of the most memorable tracks of the year.
39. Lily Allen “The Fear”
“Now I’m not a saint, but I’m not a sinner, now everything is cool as long as I’m getting thinner”
Lily Allen is arguably one of the most unique and creative artists of this generation, she enjoys criticizing modern life with her lyrics, her next victim is celebrity life. ‘The Fear’ discusses how superficial celebrity life is as she sings clever lines with a sarcastic tone such as ‘I want to be rich and I want lots of money, I don’t care about clever, I don’t care about funny’. While Lily Allen doesn’t have a powerful voice to compete with the top vocalist of this generation, she has something unique about her voice that gives her songs something special and The Fear is no exception. It’s also worth mentioning that she looks absolutely gorgeous in the video for the song, I never found her attractive before watching this. Overall, The Fear is clever, catchy, and memorable, easily the best song she has released this year.
