10. Mowgli's Road
Average: 8.4286
High: 10 (6x) - Venus, Auren, sticks, HandsOn, electroheart, LittleDreamer
Low: 5.5 (1x) - MKC

This is the first single release from keyboard-playing songstress Marina and the Diamonds. She explained to Digital Spy why she chose this for her buzz single: "Because it wasn't time for me to release one of my really big songs. 'Mowgli's Road' is one of my most uncompromising songs and I wanted to get the message out there that I'm not a manufactured girl popstar and I'm going to do my own thing. I knew it wasn't going to be really successful but that wasn't the point. Saying that, getting a song that starts with the word 'cuckoo' in the charts was worth a shot!"

The song's title is a reference to the character in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book and the track conjures up the sense if not the sound of the English writer's story. Marina explained the song's message to Digital Spy: "It's about there being two roads in fame and the industry. When I wrote it, I didn't know whether I was meant to be some kind of weird indie artist or a big pop thing. At the end of the day, I just thought, 'You can be both if you want'. I'm a leftfield artist but I want to be really successful. You know, I think celebrity culture and sexuality in pop music is really important, but I want there to be an alternative for people."

My Score: 9
Solid track that placed well. It really tells who Marina is and wants to be as an artist.

9. Are You Satisfied?
Average: 8.5238
High: 10 (4x) - Owl, HandsOn, electroheart, LittleDreamer
Low: 6 (1x) - Venus
The opening track to The Family Jewels. It is about the change Marina experienced in her life, telling about the transition to becoming a pop artist.
My Score: 7
About damn time for this to go. It didn't even deserve top 25. Very mediocre compared to the rest of the album. This marks Marina's fourth elimination in a row.

8. Tigerlily
Average: 8.5952
High: 10 (6x) - sticks, madonnas, Lil Misty, Jdella11, HandsOn, jinzo
Low: 6.5 (1x) - Venus

Singer Elly Jackson's actor father voiced the creepy spoken word section on this song. The dark lyrics on many of the tracks of La Roux's debut album were taken from sad-sack poems that Jackson wrote when she was a school girl. This cut for instance, features lyrics about stalking a former lover. "All the songs are sad," Jackson told Rolling Stone. "It was quite intense."
|
My Score: 9.5
This single should-have-been is near perfection for La Roux. I could have saw it in the top 5.

7. Bulletproof
Average: 8.7381
High: 10 (9x) - Venus, sticks, Lil Misty, MKC, HandsOn, Fruity, electroheart, Navin, Stevie
Low: 4.5 (1x) - jinzo

This was the third single to be released by the London-based electro-pop duo La Roux from their self-titled debut album. Singer Elly Jackson explained this song to the BBC Newsbeat program: "For me Bulletproof is just about looking at a situation that's usually a reoccurring one. It could be to do with anything in your life - whatever you want it to be about. I don't like being specific about what my tracks are about to me because its not really about that. It serves its purpose for me and once you put it out into the public - it then becomes what anyone wants it to be about. But it's just vaguely about, realising there's a reoccurring situation in your life, something which keeps happening to you or keeps knocking you back. Something that you can't quite get over. It's about going to yourself, 'No, I'm not going to do this to myself again because it's not good for me and I'm going to be bulletproof'."
|
Quote:
Jackson told Newsbeat about her first reaction to the finished video, in which she is styled in High Fashion clothes: "I saw the finished version last week and I love it. I love the fact that it's not '80s - that was really what I wanted from this video. I don't want every video and every single thing from here on out to be this 80s recurring theme. I didn't just want to be seen as an 80s revival artist and that was really important to me in this video. It's a really good, contemporary, slick looking video - without looking too American as well which is really important." This was La Roux's first UK #1. It debuted at the top position in the week that Michael Jackson died, so it was apt that a Jackson, in this instance Elly, was involved in that week's premier song.

My Score: 10
One of the most popular songs in this rate. It was the predicted winner, but regardless, should have made the top 5.

6. In For The Kill
Average: 8.8810
High: 10 (6x) - Venus, Lil Misty, MKC, HandsOn, LittleDreamer, jinzo
Low: 7 (2x) - Mellark, Jdella11
Quote:
Jackson explained this '80s-derived song to Steve Harris of XFM radio: "It's about telling someone how you feel regardless of what you get back, and not waiting to find out if they want you or not." She added that when she wrote this, "I was quite in to someone in quite a deep and intense way and I went overseas (Paris) and told them I like them. It all fired back in my face but that's not the point you do it for yourself."
|
Quote:
This song proved to be a huge hit for the electro-pop duo, peaking at #2 in the UK. Jackson told the BBC Newsbeat program that the song 's success was a total surprise. She said: "None of us expected it to do that at all. Me and Ben have had faith in it and we always thought it had potential to go far but we were never sure if other people were going to feel the same or if other people were going to like it. We know it has a Marmite effect vocally. Some people don't like it or they find it a bit annoying which is totally fine. We knew that when we wrote it that it was going to be a love/hate thing. It's just always really lovely when music speaks for itself like that."

My Score: 8.5
A little inflated. Still a sad elimination considering La Roux is now the first artist extinct from this rate.

And La Roux being the first one out.
I thought she would do the best in the rate!
My girl VV is doing so good though. I'm so proud. Shark In The Water is top 5.

I am surprised too.
Despite averages, La Roux's album is the strongest.
Top 5 is now:
Hollywood
Oh No!
Starry Eyed
Lights
Shark In The Water
Tell me, who is the winner?

THANK GOD VV IS STILL IN AND LA ROUX IS OUT FIRST. Love her + her album, but of the four it's my least favorite.
All of these are essentially where I wanted them to be. Although maybe Are You Satisfied could have been higher... and In For the Kill could have been top 5. Oh well though. The remaining is fine by me!
I want the final rate to be: Oh No!, Shark in the Water, Lights, Hollywood, Starry Eyed

Oh No!, Starry Eyed, and Shark In The Water are the only songs remaining possibly deserving of top 5.
Hollywood and Lights don't even deserve top 10.
